New MCU Timeline Corrects Black Panther & Thor 2 Issues

Disney has released a new MCU timeline on Disney+, correcting previous issues with the placement of Thor: The Dark World and Black Panther. The last decade has seen the superhero genre become Hollywood’s biggest success story, in large part due to Marvel Studios. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a world in which everything is connected, and the first three phases of the MCU – which ran from 2008’s Iron Man to 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home – are collectively known as the Infinity Saga. They’re a single story, beginning with Tony Stark’s suiting up as Iron Man for the first time, and coming to a climax in a spectacular battle with Thanos, the Mad Titan.

But, for all there may be an ongoing narrative running through the films, they hop around the timeline with impunity; that was especially true during Phase 3, and Marvel’s Phase 4 looks set to continue the trend. Consequently, some viewers have preferred to try to figure out a chronology, using that as an alternative viewing order to release date. To help, in 2018 Marvel Studios published an official timeline – but it actually had some striking problems. Now, Marvel and Disney have provided an update and correction, in the most unlikely way.

The latest update to Disney+ has restructured the Marvel section of the streaming service, adding four new rows. There’s one for the MCU’s Phase 1, another for Phase 2, and – somewhat unsurprisingly – a third for Phase 3. But the fourth will delight audiences, because it’s the MCU in official timeline order. It puts the MCU movies in this sequence:

The order is quite an interesting one, fixing issues in previous iterations by moving Thor: The Dark World to before Iron Man 3, and Black Panther to immediately after Captain America: Civil War. Those adjustments make perfect, narrative sense, because the third Thor film opens with Loki’s trial after the events of The Avengers, while Black Panther specifically states it is set just a week after Captain America: Civil War. The latter example was seen as an error on Marvel’s part in the previously published timeline, and it’s nice to see it fixed. Some may be surprised at Doctor Strange’s placement, but that follows on from the last timeline, and creates a clean narrative flow between Doctor Strange and Thor: Ragnarok. Meanwhile, the Guardians of the Galaxy films are wisely placed back-to-back, because they take place within months of each other.

There are, of course, three gaps in the MCU timeline on Disney+. Disney doesn’t own the distribution rights for The Incredible Hulk, Spider-Man: Homecoming, or Spider-Man: Far From Home, which means they’re entirely absent from the Disney+ timeline. This is actually quite ironic, given Marvel Studios first began talking about publishing an official timeline after a major continuity error in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Should viewers wish to check those three films out as part of a chronological order rewatch, The Incredible Hulk is simultaneous with Iron Man 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming would probably come after Black Panther, and Spider-Man: Far From Home after Avengers: Endgame.

Interestingly, this is the first time Disney and Marvel have appeared to recognize it’s possible to watch these movies in anything other than release order. Previous timelines have simply been exercises in continuity, but this is being presented as an entirely different viewing order, allowing audiences to enjoy the MCU movies in a different way. It’s nice to see Marvel acknowledge people were already interested in experiencing the MCU in chronological order, and thus legitimize their viewing preference.
