With Godzilla vs Kong now done and dusted, the Legendary’s MonsterVerse has hit an important milestone and ensured that this budding cinematic universe will continue to grow and expand. In celebration, Legendary recently dropped a new sizzle reel taking audiences back through the films.

The sizzle reel begins with clips of 2014’s Godzilla reboot, Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters and, of course, Godzilla vs Kong. The reel highlights some of the most memorable titans throughout the series, including the Mutos, Mothra, Ghidora, Skullcrawlers, the Mechagodzilla and more. There is a lot of destruction and a lot of thunderous roars.

Each instalment in the MonsterVerse has been generally well-received. The worst-performing film was 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which was criticized for its pacing and storyline. Despite its critical reception, the film grossed $386 million worldwide. 2014’s Godzilla grossed $529 million, Kong: Skull Island took $566 million and Godzilla vs Kong earned $467.8 million during the pandemic. In total, Legendary’s film franchise has earned $1.950 billion worldwide, with each film requiring a budget of roughly $155-200 million.

With regard to the future of the franchise, details are scarce. However, Godzilla vs Kong writer Max Borenstein previously hinted that there were more films in the works, teasing, “I’ve heard some exciting things that are happening that I can’t divulge.” In addition, a Skull Island anime series is currently in development for Netflix.

Netflix’s announcement for the anime teased a few details, but ultimately didn’t offer any specifics on what audiences can expect to see. The description read, “A shipwrecked crew, an island of monsters, and one king to rule them all. Skull Island is a new anime series set in [Legendary’s] Monsterverse from [Powerhouse Animation Studios].”

Godzilla vs Kong was released in 2021 as the film industry and theaters were still reopening. The epic monster movie was a huge success overseas, grossing over $20 million in China on its premiere. Elsewhere, the film was released both in cinemas and on the HBO Max streaming service. This release approach has been favored by several studios since the pandemic began, including Disney and Marvel Studios. Worth noting is that Godzilla vs Kong was the target of review-bombing by fans of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, who were trying to gain the attention of Warner Bros. to bring the DCEU franchise back.
