The Nintendo Switch Online service is about to receive some of the most beloved games in the company’s history, as well as some of the best games from their old competitors, as Nintendo 64 and Genesis gamers are coming to the service in a paid update. Rumors regarding N64 games coming to Nintendo Switch Online have been circulating for weeks now, especially in regards to a mysterious FCC filing noting that Nintendo patented a new Switch controller.

The N64 carried some of the best games ever made for a Nintendo system. There are few who can argue the importance of Mario 64 to the world of video gaming, as it ushered in the 3D era, showing what the hardware of the new systems was capable of. The most highly-regarded game on the system might be The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which was the first game to ever receive a perfect score from Famitsu. The N64 is also fondly remembered for its contributions to local multiplayer, with many groups of friends playing GoldenEye 007 and the original Super Smash Bros. on the system.

The Nintendo Switch Online app already has retro games from the NES and SNES, but that service will be expanded in a paid update It was revealed during the September 2021 Nintendo Direct that N64 and Genesis games are coming to Nintendo Switch Online as part of a paid update, called the Expansion Pack. There will also be special wireless controllers released to accommodate these games that resemble the original Genesis and N64 controllers. The N64 games will have up to four-player co-op and online multiplayer.

The N64 games confirmed to be in the app at launch include Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Star Fox 64, Yoshi’s Story, Sin and Punishment, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, WinBack, Mario Tennis, and Dr. Mario 64. The Genesis games confirmed for launch are Castlevania Bloodlines, Contra Hard Corps, Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, Ecco the Dolphin, Golden Axe, Gunstar Heroes, MUSHA, Phantasy Star IV, Ristar, Shining Force, Shinobi 3, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Streets of Rage 2, and Strider. Nintendo also announced future games that are coming to the service include The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, F-Zero X, Mario Golf, Pokémon Snap, Kirby 64, Paper Mario, and Banjo-Kazooie. The controllers will cost $49.99 each.

Nintendo has yet to reveal how much the Expansion Pack will cost, but existing subscribers to Nintendo Switch Online will be able to upgrade their membership to accommodate it. Nintendo will reveal more information about the Expansion Pack soon.
