New Okja Trailer Is Filled With Praise For Bong Joon Hos Latest

The newest trailer for Okja doesn’t waste any time heaping praise upon the film. It’s the newest directorial outing from director Bong Joon Ho, who after proving himself time and time again as a dependable and truly singular voice in the entertainment industry, made his biggest splash amongst the film community yet with 2014’s Snowpiercer. But where that film was a nihilistic sci-fi extravaganza starring Chris Evans, all set in one long train, Okja promises to have a much more lighthearted nature and tone to it than any of Bong Joon Ho’s previous titles.

Set during the modern day, the film follows Mija (An Seo Hyun) who has spent a majority of her life raising and spending time with her best friend, Okja, who is supposedly one of just several super pigs living in the world. But when Okja is suddenly taken away by the company that sent her to Mija in the first place, she risks everything she has (including her life) in order to prevent them from hurting Okja, acquiring some unexpected allies and foes along the way.

The film is set to premiere soon, and in anticipation of its release, Netflix has officially unveiled a brand new trailer for Okja online today. Thanks to its premiere several weeks ago at the Cannes International Film Festival, the trailer is packed to the brim with both stunning new visuals and accompanying quotes from multiple different outlets and critics, all of whom praise Bong Joon Ho for his work on the film. In addition to the early buzz surrounding it, there’s also been a fair amount of controversy linked to Okja leading up to, and in the weeks since it’s official premiere at Cannes. After the festival announced a new rule stating that no films could compete for the Palme d’Or without theatrical releases, the entertainment industry around the world has been abuzz speculating about how this could affect Netflix’s plan for releasing future films, and the entire future of film distribution in the years to come.

But aside from those conversations, Okja is shaping up to be one of the most promising films of this year. It’s no secret that Netflix has been steadily increasing its production and distribution of new films of the years, but while the streaming service has managed to acquire a number of impressive titles in that time, few have had quite the awe-inspiring level of talent attached to them like Okja does. Aside from just Bong Joon Ho’s talents at the helm, the film’s cast also includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Tilda Swinton, Giancarlo Esposito, Paul Dano, Steven Yeun, Lily Collins, and more. Based solely on that ensemble, early reviews, and the footage released so far, it’s fair to say at this point that Okja has officially earned its place as one of this summer’s can’t-miss films.
