In the UK, at least, the new Pokémon Snap is selling far better than its predecessor, owing as much to the Switch’s popularity as anything.

New Pokémon Snap Sells Four Times More Than Original Games UK Launch

The much-anticipated New Pokémon Snap for the Nintendo Switch sold more than four times as much during its UK physical launch week than the original Nintendo 64 game did in September 2000. This makes it the third largest UK Switch release of 2021, behind only Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury and Monster Hunter Rise.

Unlike the mainline Pokémon JRPGs and other battle-focused spin-offs, New Pokémon Snap asks players to take pictures of Pokémon rather than fighting or capturing them. The game’s ultimate goal is discovering of why creatures in the Lental region have a special, bioluminescent glow. Players gradually build up their own Photodex and can add frames, filters, stickers, and basic editing effects to their snapshots before sharing them with others. It’s also possible to browse others’ images and hand out “Sweet!” awards, while the game itself judges players on specific criteria and rates photos of Pokémon accordingly, looking at how well a photo’s Poké-subjects fill the frame and if they’re exhibiting common or rare behaviors.

New Pokémon Snap sat comfortably ahead of its rival triple-A release for the week, the PS5-exclusive Returnal, reports GamesIndustry.biz, citing the GfK Top Ten sales chart for the week beginning in May 1. In fact, Switch games in general performed well in general, with titles like Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe, Ring Fit Adventure, and the Switch port of Minecraft all saw modest sales boosts in the UK despite not being new releases. One counterpoint to that was Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which saw sales dip 7%, but that was only enough to bring the game down to fifth place.

It’s worth noting that New Pokémon Snap had the advantage of launching on a very popular console, whereas the PS5 is in short supply. Additionally, the original Pokémon Snap arrived for the Nintendo 64 – of which just 1.5 million consoles had been sold in the UK, making New Pokémon Snap’s task of dethroning its predecessor a little easier. Other relevant factors for Returnal’s defeat include Pokémon being an established, family-friendly franchise, whereas Returnal is original and adult-oriented. It’s also a roguelike, which often discourages casual gamers or simply those who don’t enjoy grinding and repetition. The latter is priced around £68 ($95) versus New Pokémon Snap’s £50 ($70) in the UK, another factor anyone on the fence between the two took into account.

It remains to be seen if New Pokémon Snap’s release-week popularity will last. The UK’s top game for the week of April 24, Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139, saw sales plummet the following week, demonstrating how sharply sales can fall after launch week. However, past Nintendo first-party sales performances’ tendency to last may mean New Pokémon Snap may remain a favorite in the region for some time.
