Minor spoilers for Robin #1 ahead!

The first issue of DC’s new Robin solo comic reveals that Batman’s son Damian Wayne is secretly a manga fan. The new series sees Damian leaving Gotham City behind to set off on a new solo journey to discover the secrets of the League of Lazarus. Despite the arduous quest ahead of him, it turns out that the former Robin still has a little bit of time for some light reading.

Times have been tough for Damian Wayne. He recently lost one of his father figures with the death of Alfred Pennyworth and his new, extra-brutal methods of crime fighting have turned his former Teen Titans teammates against him. To top it all off, Damian has estranged himself from his father and rejected his title as Robin. Fleeing from his friends and family, Damian has gone completely off the grid.

Robin #1 by Joshua Williamson and Gleb Melnikov provides some insight into where Damian is at right now, both literally and figuratively. After fighting in a cage match to gain information on the League of Lazarus, Damian quietly blows off some steam not with more training or planning, but by reading some manga. It’s not some ultra-violent manga either; the story Damian reads is one about two young painters named Hana and Ren. In the excerpt of the manga that readers are able to see, Ren notices that Hana doesn’t sketch before she paints. Ren explains that his parents always told him that he had to follow a plan for his art if he wanted to be a successful painter. Hana says that she doesn’t allow her instructors to control her art and that Ren should ignore his parents’ advice and paint from his heart.

This manga excerpt holds some pretty deep thematic significance for Damian’s inner conflict right now. Damian is similar to Ren in the sense that, for all his life, his parental figures have emphasized the importance of training and planning. Hana’s artistic freedom mirrors Damian’s recent desire to eschew his training in favor of pursuing his own methods. Still, the former Robin is conflicted. As he reads, he remarks, “C’mon, Hana, you must have a plan…” Even though the manga’s idea of freedom appeals to Damian, acting without a plan is a foreign concept for him and goes against the mentality Batman instilled in him as Robin.

Aside from the symbolic significance this manga has for Damian’s character, it’s also just nice to see a rare moment of Damian acting like a normal kid and reading something for entertainment. It’s a clear reminder that despite his ultra-serious personality and impressive skill set, Damian is still just a boy struggling to find his way in the world. Readers can expect to catch more of these glimpses into Damian Wayne’s vulnerable side when Robin #2 releases on May 25, 2021.
