During the first ever Sonic Central livestream, Sega teased a new Sonic the Hedgehog game for 2022. The announcement came towards the end of the twelve-minute presentation, and – though it provided little to go on – it’s given fans of the series hope that a return to form could come at last.

The presentation showcased several new Sonic games, such as the new Sonic Colors: Ultimate, a remaster of the previously Nintendo DS and Wii exclusive. Just before the end of the stream, as Chief Brand Officer Ivo Gerscovich was signing off, Sega came through with a final, brief teaser cinematic.

With around 30 seconds left in the Sega stream, footsteps could be heard over a black screen. Viewers were then greeted to a cinematic clip of Sonic himself zooming through a forest environment. There was no dialogue or text in the teaser, other than a cryptic symbol, which gave way to a short, simple release window: 2022. The game is being worked on by Sonic Team, which last released Sonic Forces in 2017, to mixed reception. Being a teaser, not much is available in the brief clip, but fans do get a look at the upcoming game’s art style, which has previously been something both classic 2D and modern 3D Sonic fans have famously been vocal about.

Around this time in 2020, Sega publicly said it would slow down the amount of Sonic titles it releases, to ensure the games are of a higher quality. With just a little over a year having passed since that announcement, the first game presumably developed with this new philosophy has been announced. At the time of writing, this newly announced Sonic game does not have a title, but that’s sure to change soon.

While the initial response in the stream chat contained endless hype and speculation about the new game’s identity, other fans seem to be a bit let down. The teaser was quite brief, only being around half-a-minute long (if that), revealing only a partial look at Sonic’s new visage and a lush forest area. With five years between Sonic Forces and the upcoming 2022 game, fans were expecting a bit more than they got. It is worth noting that, with Sega set to make an E3 2021 appearance, so it’s probable that more will be revealed about Sonic Team’s new title in the coming weeks.

A brief, quick trailer may be kind of fitting for the world’s fastest hedgehog. It’s safe to say is that Sega is surely hoping that this new Sonic the Hedgehog title it has been working on is the one that gets fans back on board with the franchise in 2022.
