New SpiderMan Alternate Timeline Taking Cues From Animated Series

In an upcoming Spider-Man miniseries exploring an alternate timeline, there seems to be a surprising amount of cues taken from the hit ‘90s animated series. For longtime fans, this “what if” storyline might be more familiar than previously expected.

Before there were any Spider-Man movies, the animated series released in 1994 was the web-slinger’s most popular adaptation. However, with the plethora of iterations over the years since the show aired, that version of events has largely been forgotten in mainstream continuity, with little to no influence on Spider-Man’s evolution. However, an alternate version of Peter Parker’s life that harkens back to the series will soon be explored in the four issue-long Spider-Man: Spider’s Shadow by Chip Zdarsky (Spider-Man: Life Story) with art by Pasqual Ferry and Matt Hollingsworth (Seven To Eternity).

Based on a recently released preview for Spider’s Shadow, three iconic characters from the Spider-Man animated series will play a big part. While Peter Parker wears the symbiote suit associated with Venom, he faces the Hobgoblin and meets up with love interest Black Cat. While each character appearing on their own might not seem like much, the combination of all three elements as depicted in the preview call back to the animated show of the ‘90s. Hobgoblin was a recurring villain at the time, and Black Cat’s arc was a standout, as was Venom’s. Rather than just an alternate version of Peter’s life, these pages also convey the idea this could be a direct response to the old series.

Although it’s possible this sequence of events is simply a coincidence, it’s not out of the question that Zdarsky intended for Hobgoblin and Black Cat’s appearances to echo the show. As Peter isn’t able to resist the symbiote and loses his Spider-Man persona, devolving into Venom, his life as readers know it is being flipped on its head. While he takes the character into a brand new direction, it’s somewhat comforting to take a glimpse at a recognizable version of the past. Especially given that this miniseries has been called one of the “most ruthless” takes on Spidey, revisiting a more innocent iteration in which the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler never threw any punches feels appropriate.

There is still a lot of potential for the four issues to subvert readers’ expectations as Spider-Man’s iconic black suit becomes an alternate timeline’s status quo. With these few preview pages already providing an homage to the past series, there is a good chance more echoes to Marvel’s animated era of the ‘90s will be revealed in subsequent issues. For many modern day fans, the show served as an entry point to the Marvel Universe, and would be a strong point of connection into this bleak alternate world. Spider-Man: Spider’s Shadow #1 releases on Wednesday, April 14.
