New Star Wars Novel Explores Anakin & Padmés Wedding Day

A new Star Wars novel is set to explore Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala’s wedding day. There is a sense in which Anakin Skywalker was never truly committed to the Jedi Order; although he was attached to them on an emotional level, he was unwilling to live by their rules, and instead in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones he pursued the forbidden love of Padmé Amidala. Worse still, Anakin’s feelings for Padmé were based in selfish attachment, not in selfless love. The second film in the prequel trilogy ended with them marrying on Naboo, a marriage that would end in tragedy.

Lucasfilm has been using tie-in novels and comics to add more depth to the prequel trilogy, fleshing out details that have never been revealed before and exploring character arcs. They’ve been particularly focused on Padmé, with E.K. Johnston writing a superb trilogy exploring her story. Johnston has transformed Padmé’s handmaidens into three-dimensional characters in their own right and even revealed Padmé intended to liberate the slaves of Tatooine once she had ended her term as Queen of Naboo. Padmé’s plans changed when she was asked to become Naboo’s senator, but she still sent one of her handmaidens to Tatooine in an unsuccessful attempt to free Shmi Skywalker – who had already been sold to Owen Lars and was never found.

The third book in E.K. Johnston’s trilogy, Queen’s Hope, will be published on April 5, 2022. Lucasfilm has just published an exclusive excerpt from the book on the Star Wars website, revealing it will give a full account of Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala’s wedding day, and of course it didn’t go smoothly. The excerpt opens with the two preparing, with Anakin visiting a shrine dedicated to Qui-Gon Jinn in the hopes of hearing the Jedi Master’s voice from beyond the grave; meanwhile, Padmé takes a swim before receiving an unexpected visitor, who assigns her a mission.

Speaking as part of a press release accompanying the excerpt, Johnston noted there is a difference between this book and the others in her series. “I think the main difference between Queen’s Hope and the other two books in the trilogy is that Padmé is, in the end, a small part of a big galaxy,” she reflects. “Before, she was central to the conflict and could play a direct role in fixing the problems. Now, she’s part of a system — an important part — that’s under a LOT of stress. She’s not going to be able to fix everything, though she is certainly not going to stop trying. It’s her best and worst quality. We know it’s going to get her killed, but she is never, ever going to give up on the people she loves and the causes she believes in.” Johnston’s previous books have stressed Padmé’s courage and convictions, and this time period — one in which she is full of hope for her relationship with Anakin Skywalker, and yet also full of fear because of the beginning of the Clone Wars — is surely one that will test them.

For all that’s the case, though, the truly remarkable aspect of the excerpt is the brief glimpse of Anakin Skywalker’s inner world at a time of significant change for him. He had already lost faith in the Jedi, choosing to look for a life beyond them for fulfillment, but he had not yet begun to admit it to himself — which explains why Anakin didn’t leave the Jedi. Viewed through that lens, Anakin’s attempt to commune with the spirit of Qui-Gon Jinn — making him the first prequel era Jedi to actually believe he could speak to the dead — looks like a half-hearted attempt to resolve the conflict he was ignoring stirring within his own heart. It is striking that, in the excerpt, Anakin concludes the absence of Qui-Gon’s voice indicates his blessing; it’s such a believable response, with the struggling Jedi desperate to believe he was doing the right thing. E.K. Johnston’s novel looks set to be a vital addition to Star Wars lore, giving a glimpse inside the hearts and minds of the prequel era heroes at one of the defining moments in their lives.
