Jared Leto looks way creepier as Joker in a new Suicide Squad image. The actor debuted as the DCEU’s version of the Clown Prince of Crime in David Ayer’s villain-centric film from 2016. He reprised the role in Zack Snyder’s Justice League but only during its post-credits sequence. Since then, it’s been unclear if there’s a chance for him to once again revisit the role.

The marketing for Suicide Squad largely focused on selling the Joker’s involvement in the narrative. Warner Bros. knew full well of the character’s popularity, and they wanted to take advantage of it. So, fans were disappointed when his role in the blockbuster was nothing more than a glorified cameo. He’s not an official member of Task Force X, and totally taking him out of the movie wouldn’t have much of an impact on its story. This obviously caused backslash, accusing the film of misleading its viewers. Ayer has been vocal about the way his vision for Suicide Squad was significantly changed, with the last-minute reshoots drastically trimming down Joker’s supposed part in the blockbuster.

Now, Ayer has shared a never-before-seen look for Leto’s Joker in Suicide Squad, and it’s way creepier compared to all the alternate appearances for the character. In this version, the Clown Prince of Crime has a much bigger smile outlined in black ink. Meanwhile, his eyebrows are just smaller tattoos of “HAHAHA.” Check out the photo below shared on Twitter by @BingeWatchThis_:

Ayer debuted another new photo of Leto as the Joker recently, in which the character seems to be inside a prison — almost like the cages where Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and the rest of the Suicide Squad were initially detained by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). Interestingly, the Clown Prince of Crime is holding a baseball bat, which could be the same bat that his then-girlfriend was wielding. In the caption for that photo, Ayer wrote that Leto killed it in his DCEU role, “but no one knows it.” He’s referring to the character’s trimmed-down role in the film, with much of the actor’s performance ultimately getting cut from its theatrical version.

Leto, on the other hand, is moving on from his stint as Joker after Suicide Squad and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. He is set to play a Marvel role as Morbius The Living Vampire in Sony’s Morbius. Aside from that, his performance in Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci is also earning positive reviews. It’s uncertain if he will ever reprise the role as the Clown Prince of Crime again. That being said, even with Joaquin Phoenix’s version of the character now existing, the burgeoning DC multiverse could ultimately bring him back as the Batman villain.
