Nintendo really hasn’t given their followers much to go on after announcing a pair of new Super Smash Bros. games for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Despite having very little information made available — other than news that Namco Bandai would be aiding in the development of both versions of Super Smash Bros. — gamers have remained excited for the next two iterations of this massively hyped fighting franchise.

It’s easy to get lost in speculation when it comes to the contents of Super Smash Bros. 4, but Masahiro Sakurai (the man responsible for the aforementioned series) has revealed a little bit of information pertaining to his ongoing projects — simultaneously grounding far-fetched speculation and assuring long-time fans that they have nothing to worry about.

During a recent interview with IGN, Sakurai set the record straight on what he thinks of third-party characters, and what role they will realistically play in the upcoming Super Smash Bros.. He admitted that Solid Snake and Sonic the Hedgehog made for some solid additions, but adding too many guest characters would take away the spotlight from the games’ Nintendo focus.

“I think Snake and Sonic joining were fantastic. It made many fans happy, and it broadened the Smash Bros arena. However, introducing more non-Nintendo characters willy-nilly will lose the focus of the game, so I also recognise the need to narrow it down.”

In addition to downplaying the inclusion of a very small amount of additional third-party characters in Super Smash Bros. 4’s roster, Sakurai also touched on how his team was looking into ways for gamers to use the Wii U’s multiple control options.

“The GameCube controller is not the only way to control Smash Bros., so we will look into ways that fits the Wii U.”

Multiple controller options are never a bad thing, and the Wii U Pro controller should make for one of the best ways to play in the history of the franchise. The only thing that may mess up the fung shway of the series’ combat, however, is Namco Bandai’s involvement with the game. Masahiro reassured fans that he isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel, and even though there will be a few slight modifications, the core gameplay experience will remain untouched.

“The game system itself is complete, so we don’t want to make it 3D or introduce complicated controls just for the sake of it. However, I am thinking of ways we can introduce a slightly different, fun experience all the while keeping the usual frantic game play.”

The next Super Smash Bros. has a lot to live up to, but with Sakurai overseeing the project there’s almost no way it will disappoint. There’s still an unnerving amount of things we don’t know about the next Smash (even its official name is still a mystery), but with the Wii U creeping closer and closer to its release later this year, it’s only a matter of time until followers get to see a glimpse of the new brawler in action.
