A few new job listings for 2K Games-owned developer Cloud Chamber Games indicates that the next BioShock title may take place in an open-world environment with all-new approaches to design and mechanics. Reportedly, the new BioShock entry has been in development for several years. However, 2K officially announced the project late last year, revealing its newly established Cloud Chamber was on board to helm the beloved franchise’s fourth installment.

Since 2K first teased Cloud Chamber’s debut project, details have remained incredibly scarce. This hardly comes as a surprise, though, since whatever the new BioShock entails won’t release for another few years. Still, bits and pieces of information have surfaced piecemeal. Much of it is thanks to another set of job listings that cropped up back in August, hinting at a “new and fantastical world,” a world presumably separate from BioShock’s previous settings of Rapture and Columbia.

An industry analyst on Twitter, MauroNL, stumbled across a handful of job listings on Cloud Chamber’s Greenhouse Boards page, a number of which imply BioShock’s fantastical, new world will be a sandbox of sorts. The fresh batch of postings number three in total, related to roles for Game AI Programmer, Lead Systems Designer, and Senior Voice Designer. The job postings for Lead Systems Designer specifically notes the “ideal candidate” should have “an innate sense of how game systems connect and enhance one another in an emergent sandbox world.” This same listing later describes the roles as one responsible for: “Interactive world systems and non-AI systemic ecology.”

Some more info about the next #Bioshock game can be gathered from recent joblistings at developer Cloud Chamber Games. New available jobs include Senior Voice Designer, Game AI Programmer and Lead Systems Designer, and the job descriptions reveal some interesting details. 1/6

Cloud Chamber’s other job postings feature a couple of noteworthy tidbits, too. For example, the Game AI Programmer will take charge of tasks like fleshing out and finalizing the designs and implementations “for an urban crowd system and the systemic tribal ecology of a sometimes hostile AI.” Meanwhile, the listing for Senior Voice Designer makes mention of previously gleaned details about the title’s narrative-driven ambitions.

The mention of a sandbox world suggests Cloud Chamber’s BioShock, which has reportedly been in development for multiple years, could be more in line with the franchise’s first two outings. Both BioShock and its 2010 sequel boasted hub worlds, open spaces that players could more or less freely explore as the main story progressed. BioShock Infinite, on the other hand, offered players a comparatively linear experience in terms of its scope. Once an area was cleared there was rarely a means or a reason to return.

With that in mind, it’s possible the series’ new adventure will follow somewhat of a similar pattern. Thus, these job listings may not exactly point to a fully formed open-world à la Red Dead Redemption 2. But who can say for sure what Cloud Chamber and 2K have in store? It’s been nearly eight years since fans first set foot on the cobblestone streets of Columbia. Times have changed, so, too, have games; perhaps a bigger BioShock isn’t beyond the realm of possibility?
