A free update coming to Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl will add alternate costumes for the crossover’s cast of cartoonish characters. The recently-released platform fighting game brings together many prominent Nicktoons icons such as Spongebob Squarepants, Danny Phantom, CatDog and Invader Zim. Despite the fact that they are a staple feature throughout the crossover fighting genre, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl launched without alternate costumes to the disappointment of some fans.

With games such as Super Smash Bros. and PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale serving as inspiration, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl brings together a huge roster of playable characters. The Nicktoons brand has produced a huge number of nostalgic animated series since the 90’s, ranging from Spongebob Squarepants to Avatar: The Last Airbender to The Loud House, and they are all represented within the game. However, some notable features common to the genre were missing from Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl upon release, much to the disappointment of fans. A lack of alternate costumes decreased the title’s visual variety and made fights involving character clones unnecessarily confusing, though developers later announced the feature would arrive as a free update. Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl also lacks voice acting for all of its fighters, though some fans hope this could be rectified in a post-launch update as well.

A very retro-styled trailer for Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl’s free costumes, posted to YouTube by IGN, shows off the game’s upcoming influx of fashion. Every single character in the roster will receive new outfits to choose from, with many of them paying homage to Nicktoons history. For example, Spongebob becomes #1 with his beloved soda drink hat while Sandy Cheeks gets her purple uniform from a dangerous pre-hibernation competition. Aang can don a spiffy hat, Invader Zim gets his terrible human disguise, and both Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles representatives can revert to their classic black-and-white designs. All of these alternate designs will be available on December 3, and on Nintendo Switch later in December, for free.

While Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl brought various Nicktoons together for some competitive combat, MultiVersus will drag various different Warner Bros. properties into the crossover fighting game genre. The recently-announced title looks keen to surpass the competition, with MultiVersus including alternate costumes at launch rather than as a post-launch addition. The free-to-play title will bring together a huge variety of distinct franchises, with representatives from DC Comics, Scooby-Doo, Game of Thrones, Looney Tunes and more. The big Warner Bros. crossover will also feature voice acting for every single character on the roster, with beloved actors returning to reprise their roles, including Kevin Conroy as Batman and Maisie Williams as Arya Stark.

With the addition of alternate costumes, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl will add a highly-requested feature that was noticeably absent upon release. The crossover brawler features a large cast of characters, each with their own unique history within the animated Nicktoons world. This history allows for a number of highly nostalgic and recognizable alternate outfits, which should make it easier for players to identify their fighter during a hectic match.
