Nightmares In The Makeup Chair is a forthcoming documentary that sees Robert Englund transform into Freddy Krueger one last time. A Nightmare On Elm Street writer/director Wes Craven based the idea on a series of articles involving immigrants mysteriously dying in their sleep following complaints of horrible nightmares. When it came to dreaming up Freddy’s signature knife glove, he got inspired after seeing his cat pawing furniture and thought one of mankind’s oldest fears would be clawed animals.

A Nightmare On Elm Street was a low-budget production that became a surprise success in 1984. It also spawned a genuine pop culture phenomenon, with Robert Englund returning as Freddy for several sequels, a TV show, a video game, albums and much more. The series hit something of a financial peak with the fourth entry in 1988, with interest in the character gradually waning afterward. Craven returned to the series one last time for Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, an ahead of its time, meta deconstruction of the franchise. Englund’s last movie appearance as the character was 2003’s Freddy Vs Jason, but he’s essentially ruled out returning for another film.

Jackie Earle Haley stepped into the fedora and glove for 2010’s A Nightmare On Elm Street reboot, which was a success but received terrible reviews. The future of the franchise is currently unclear, but it feels like a concept rife with potential in the hands of the right filmmaker. While Robert Englund is unlikely to star in another movie, in 2017 a documentary called Nightmares In The Makeup Chair was announced that saw him don Freddy’s iconic makeup again.

Nightmares In The Makeup Chair is directed by Mike Kerz and follows the entire process necessary to turn Robert Englund into Freddy Krueger. Makeup effects artist Robert Kurtzman – who also directed 1997 cult horror Wishmaster – is in charge of this transformation, which also sees Englund reflect on his time with the series and the character. Footage of this process was actually captured in 2014 for a horror convention, which was said to be the final time the actor would wear the makeup.

Nightmares In The Makeup Chair sounds like a must for all A Nightmare On Elm Street fans, but since it was first announced, there’s been little sign of it being released. Since filming the documentary Robert Englund was also lured into making a cameo as Freddy Krueger on an episode of The Goldbergs too, meaning Nightmares In The Makeup Chair no longer chronicles his “final” time in the makeup. Still, the documentary would offer a unique insight into the makeup process, so hopefully it will reappear sometime in the near future.
