Nightwing Doesn’t Approve of Batman’s Love Life

Warning! Spoilers for Batman/Catwoman #8

In Batman/Catwoman #8, released last week, Nightwing makes some pretty brazen remarks about Batman’s love life and his tumultuous relationship with Catwoman. It’s known in the DC world that Batman and Catwoman can’t quite seem to make their relationship work. In fact, with Catwoman being a thief (usually) and Batman’s superhero status, the chances of their relationship really working out are nearly zero percent.

But over the years, in the comics, they find themselves drawn together despite nearly insurmountable problems. Batman/Catwoman #8 shows just how toxic their relationship can be. What’s more, it turns out Nightwing would rather see Batman with pretty much anyone else besides Catwoman, which he makes clear in the new issue.

Written by Tom King with art by Liam Sharp, Batman/Catwoman #8 opens on the Gotham City rooftops where a gloomy sky acts as the backdrop for the on-again-off-again couple’s quarrel. Nightwing wastes no time in suggesting Batman and Catwoman aren’t a good fit for each other, suggesting alternatives instead. In Nightwing’s rant about who he’d rather see Batman with he says, “Why not the reporter, or the socialite, or the bodyguard. Hell, why not Wonder Woman? Wonder Woman is very nice.” Just a few panels after Nightwing’s remark, Catwoman is shown slapping Batman in typical Batman-slap-meme fashion.

Following that forceful slap, readers see their shadowy silhouettes chase each other from roof to roof. Catwoman claims that no matter what she does, whether she lies or tells him the truth about her actions, Batman always ends up being angry with her. She goes on to express that Batman sees her as his property and doesn’t hold back in displaying her rage at him. All in all, Batman/Catwoman #8 is a tough one for the two characters and their romance.

While Batman and Catwoman’s relationship is seemingly toxic, they’ve created a kind of bond only they can understand. It seems to work for them, and they even marry at one point. While the thrill of meeting and coupling up with one’s complete opposite is often alluring, these kinds of unions aren’t usually built to last. They often wreak havoc on the couple and those who are forced to witness their relationship. So, maybe Nightwing does have a point in Batman/Catwoman #8. At the very least, it seems like he’s looking out for Batman in suggesting relationship alternatives, even if the hero isn’t likely to change his mind anytime soon. Readers will just have to wait until the next issue to find out where Batman and Catwoman’s relationship is headed.
