Nightwing’s New Villain Is One of DC’s Most Brutal Ever

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Nightwing #79 from Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo

In the latest issue of DC Comics’ Nightwing, a new villain has come to Blüdhaven, seeking to brutally prey upon its weakest and least fortunate citizens among the homeless. Seeing as how these are the very same people Dick Grayson has decided to help with his inherited billions, it’s likely that Nightwing and this new foe will be crossing paths, though it might not end so well for the former Boy Wonder, as this villain literally rips out people’s hearts, striking from the city’s darkest corners.

In the beginning of Nightwing #79 from writer Tom Taylor and artist Bruno Redondo, Dick is struggling to decide what he should do with the billions of dollars left for him in Alfred’s will, and he has Batgirl by his side to help him figure it all out. However, the inspiration soon comes to him when a man named Martin and his son ask for spare change. With this request, Dick leaps into action, buying pizza for Martin, his son, and several other folks he told them to call who could also use a hot meal. Not only that, but he also made sure that they had a hotel room for the month, fully paid for. Additionally, Dick later discovers an entire tent city filled with homeless children and teens, whom the city has apparently disregarded. With that in mind, Nightwing decides that he’s going to be a safety net for these people who have fallen on hard times, and it looks as though he’ll be taking some direct actions with his significant funds in future issues.

However, Martin and his son were later stopped in an alleyway, and a dark figure told Martin to send his son away. Once it was just the two of them, Martin tried to explain that he didn’t have anything, though this mysterious new villain disagreed, firing his weapon at Martin’s chest which ripped his heart out. Teasers for this issue and the upcoming Nightwing #80 have confirmed that this new villain’s name is Heartless, and it’s just been made brutally clear as to why.

Right as Dick Grayson has decided to help the homeless, a new villain has emerged to kill them, indicating that a major conflict is in store for Nightwing as he attempts to take care of and protect those who have long been looked over by the cruelty of Blüdhaven. While it’s unclear what Heartless wants with these hearts (or even what he really looks like), it seems as though he’s potentially being selective in his choice of victims amongst the homeless community, as he told the dying Martin that he wanted him because “he had a heart”, perhaps indicating that Heartless desired his heart in particular due to his kindness.

In any case, Nightwing’s new villain is incredibly dark and brutal, and it’s going to be crucial that Dick Grayson takes him down as quickly as possible, especially if he wants to start his new crusade off on a solid foundation. Seeing as how Dick’s own heart if very big due to his willingness to help everyone he can, here’s hoping Nightwing himself doesn’t get his heart ripped out in future issues of the series from DC Comics.
