Nintendo Predicted To Top Console Sales In A Record Holiday For Gaming

In a year that will soon see the release of two major next-gen consoles, predictions are already being made by analysts at NPD Group that the Nintendo Switch will come out on top this holiday season. Many have been playing video games more often this year compared to others due to the global pandemic that has forced millions to stay at home, and it’s arguable that no gaming company has benefited more than than Nintendo.

There is a lot of excitement being built up over the soon to be released PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, to the point where pre-orders are becoming more scarce from the sheer demand over them. While Microsoft hasn’t had as much of a pre-order disaster as Sony, the amount of pre-orders both systems have gotten is a testament to the hype both of these systems are gathering.

A NPD prediction piece written by Mat Piscatella predicts that due to the scarcity of the next-gen consoles, the Nintendo Switch will be the best selling console this holiday season, and that sales of video games will reach $13.4 billion. The Switch has also been struggling to remain in stock this year throughout the pandemic, as the report notes, but it’s still not as much of a disaster as much as the PlayStation 5 pre-order fiasco. The report also predicts that the sales of the PS5 and Xbox Series X will sizzle and will be the “hottest holiday gifting items in 2020” with how strong the demand is.

The piece also referred to a survey from July stating that over 244 million Americans play video games now, and that players are playing on an average of 14 hours a week in 2020 compared to 12 hours in 2018. This is no doubt in part due to the aforementioned pandemic keeping lots of people at home. A DFC survey in August also revealed that over 3 billion people play video games globally, with a significant majority playing mobile games – a platform with which the Switch has a lot in common.

With the PS5 pre-order fiascos along with the Nintendo Switch’s portability, it’s easy to see how Nintendo could potentially win against Microsoft and Sony this holiday season. Though Nintendo hasn’t had the most active release schedule in 2020, possibly also due to the pandemic, Nintendo has had some successful releases this year such as Paper Mario: The Origami King, the Isle of Armor as well as the soon to be released Crown Tundra DLC for Pokémon Sword & Shield, and the extremely popular Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which broke Switch sales records. Animal Crossing: New Horizons, especially, couldn’t have come out at a better time, with the game providing the need for social interaction that the pandemic took away with social distancing. With the Christmas events set to be released in the game within the next few months to keep player engagement further, it’s safe to say that Nintendo’s got it good this year.
