The Nintendo Switch Online subscription service has long been the subject of controversy for its meager offerings and poor online connectivity, but a recent update has poured salt in the wound for some gamers.

The Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, which launched in March with support for Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis games, has received a minor content update. Based on Nintendo’s Twitter replies, it’s not quite enough. The Expansion Pack includes access to DLC for Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and, as of a Twitter announcement earlier today, the four-year-old Octo Expansion DLC for 2017’s Splatoon 2. As many pointed out, however, Nintendo seemed to be drawing from older content, making its offer appear outdated.

Fan response to this announcement has been less than stellar. Some have expressed disappointment that the most significant addition to the Expansion Pack in some time is DLC for a game that many players already own, while others remain frustrated at the lack of an a la carte pricing option for retro games. The response to the announcement, at least on Twitter, is near-universally negative, with some fans remarking on Nintendo’s recent labor abuse controversy.

The NSO Expansion Pack is no stranger to the frustration of Switch owners. At launch, the service was resented for its Nintendo-standard high prices, the poor emulation of Nintendo 64 games and the lack of benefits relative to the basic Nintendo Switch Online service. Annoyance with Nintendo’s pricing scheme and the content-light nature of the Expansion Pack remain points of contention for many fans, and Splatoon 2 DLC from 2018 doesn’t seem to be enough to put those frustrations to rest.

Octo Expansion was added to the Expansion Pack the same day Nintendo announced a September release date for Splatoon 3, potentially to provide Expansion Pack owners with a reason to return to Splatoon 2 ahead of the new title’s launch. Unfortunately, as fans have pointed out, neither Nintendo Switch Online nor the Expansion Pack allows players to upload Splatoon 2 saves to the cloud. The addition of Octo Expansion, regardless of the DLC’s quality, is being regarded by most fans as a half-measure for a poor service in dire need of a proper update.

Splatoon 2 and the Octo Expansion DLC are available on the Nintendo Switch, as is the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack bundle. Owners of the Expansion Pack can play Octo Expansion at no additional cost as of April 22, 2022.
