No Train to Busan Isnt Related to All of Us Are Dead

Korean dramas on Netflix have become a booming streaming market, and that trend seems to be continuing with the release of All of Us Are Dead. Featuring a zombie apocalypse narrative in South Korea, the show’s living dead have more than a passing resemblance to how the zombies in another popular Korean piece of media operate.

This, along with other elements, has many viewers wondering if there’s a connection between Train to Busan and All of Us Are Dead. The answer is both more simplistic and more complex than people would think, which likely only heightens the confusion. With the show hitting heights on Netflix’s rating charts, here’s a look at whether or not it ties to one of the biggest South Korean films in recent years.

What Is All of Us Are Dead About – and What Is It Based On?

Releasing on Netflix in late January 2022, All of Us Are Dead combines the horror and gore of a zombie apocalypse with the drama of high school. Its story involves the aftermath of an awry experiment that leads to a massive outbreak of a zombie infection. Caught in the crossfire are several high school students who are left completely on their own without help from the authorities. Fighting to survive, they squabble among each other as they attempt to make it out of their ordeal alive.

Known as Now At Our School in South Korea, the series is a live-action adaptation of the Korean Webtoon series of the same name. That series ran from 2009 to 2011, long before the platform or Korean media, in general, became nearly as mainstream in the West. Despite this popularity, production for the zombie show only began in 2020. The series has received favorable reception, but the biggest question that it’s drawing out of most viewers is whether or not it’s connected to Train to Busan.

Is Train to Busan Connected to All of Us Are Dead?

Given how huge the zombie horror movie Train to Busan was, it’s not surprising that people are drawing several parallels between it and All of Us Are Dead. Not only are they both South Korean, but they also feature rather bloodthirsty and brisk zombies, far removed from more lumbering incarnations of the monsters. The creators of the Netflix series likely realized this, however, and quickly made it clear that the show is not in the same continuity as Yeon Sang-ho’s Train to Busan.

After the zombie apocalypse begins to transpire in All of Us Are Dead, Lee Cheong-san mentions that their current circumstance “is like Train to Busan.” This cements the movie as being a purely fictional story in the show’s universe. It is rather ironic, however, given that the original Webtoon series for All of Us Are Dead predates Train to Busan by several years. However, with the show only now coming out on Netflix, it’s now being compared to a movie that it likely inspired.
