No Way Home: How Each Spider-Man Villain Died in Their Own Universe

The No Way Home trailer revealed that all of its multiversal villains are fated to die, meeting their ends from the non-MCU Spider-Man films.

The release of the full-length trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home revealed that the movie’s assortment of villains plucked from the cinematic multiverse — from Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus to Jamie Foxx’s Electro — are all fated to die at the hands of Spider-Man back in their respective worlds. Most of them died facing off against Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield’s versions of Peter Parker, but a few survived their initial debuts.

With this in mind, here is a guide to every returning villain confirmed for No Way Home, their roles in prior Spider-Man films and whether or not we have seen them meet a grisly end.

Alfred Molina as Dr. Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus

Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus has apparently been rescued — albeit temporarily — from his watery grave in Spider-Man 2. That film ended with Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker revealing his secret identity to his former mentor, prompting Otto to destroy his fusion reactor and save New York, drowning in the process. His redemption thus makes his pursuit of Tom Holland’s Peter in No Way Home somewhat surprising, but they do seem to put their initial animosity aside for the sake of finding the other villains.

Jamie Foxx as Max Dillon/Electro

When Jamie Foxx played Max Dillon in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, he resembled his blue-skinned counterpart from the Ultimate Comics universe and died from an electrical overload triggered by Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker and Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy. The Electro who appears in No Way Home looks completely different; his yellow lightning making him comparable to the version from the main comic universe, implying that Foxx may be playing a new variant of the character who also meets his maker thanks to Spider-Man.

Thomas Haden Church as Flint Marko/Sandman

If some of the returning foes are variants, it would explain Thomas Haden Church’s reprisal of Flint Marko/Sandman. Revealed in Spider-Man 3 as the true killer of Cliff Robertson’s Uncle Ben, Maguire’s Peter tried to exact murderous revenge on him in their initial encounter, but ultimately forgave him and allowed him to escape after the final battle. The Sandman in No Way Home may be from a reality where this mercy was never offered, or perhaps the original Flint will die after a rematch with Spider-Man yet to be depicted on screen.

Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curtis Connors/The Lizard

Another menace who survived his duel with Spider-Man is Rhys Ifans’ version of the Lizard. The Amazing Spider-Man concluded with his transformation back into Dr. Curt Connors, after Garfield’s Peter foiled his attempt to turn humanity into creatures like himself. This Connors is shown to be imprisoned in the movie’s post-credits scene, so he could be plucked from a fatal rematch with Spider-Man. Then again, Ifans’ Lizard in No Way Home may be a variant whose first meeting with Garfield’s Peter played out differently.

Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborn/Green Goblin

The first villain Spider-Man ever faced in a theatrical film was Willem Dafoe’s Norman Osborn/Green Goblin. He suffered a most memorable demise, as he accidentally impaled himself with his own glider at the climax of the original Spider-Man. His re-emergence in No Way Home is likely a result of being taken during his fatal fight with Maguire’s Peter, his death being one of many Holland’s Peter Parker seems hellbent on preventing. Given how dangerous any version of the Goblin is, it could be an effort he lives to regret.

Spider-Man: No Way Home opens exclusively in theaters on Dec. 17.
