No Way Home Writers Address Possibility Of SpiderMan 4

Warning: this article contains spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Spider-Man: No Way Home writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers address the possibility of Spider-Man 4. The screenwriting duo has penned all three installments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man trilogy from 2017’s Homecoming to the recently released No Way Home. The highly-anticipated MCU movie debuted in theaters this past weekend and as expected, quickly became one of the biggest openings of all time. The film now stands as the second-biggest opening day and weekend behind its fellow MCU movie, Avengers: Endgame.

Picking up right where 2019’s Far From Home left off, the Spider-Man threequel proved to be the wildest ride yet for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker alongside Zendaya’s MJ and Jacob Batalon’s Ned Leeds. On the heels of Doctor Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) botched spell and Doc Ock’s (Alfred Molina) sudden appearance in the MCU, the trio is tasked with rounding up all the multiversal trespassers from Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe) to Electro (Jamie Foxx) and sending them back to their respective universes. After Peter realizes they will be sent back to their deaths, he hatches a plan to save the villains, which soon goes awry and leads to deadly consequences for Spider-Man.

Now that Spider-Man: No Way Home has hit theaters worldwide, the writers behind the film are addressing the possibility of a follow-up. During an interview with FandomWire, Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers said they are not privy to (or not at liberty to reveal) plans for the future of the franchise, though the No Way Home writers would absolutely return for Spider-Man 4 if asked. This is one where we don’t have to say that we’re not allowed to say because we truly don’t know. To my knowledge, I’m not aware of any future projects in the works. That doesn’t mean they don’t exist, but that’s nothing that you know anyone has talked to Chris and I about. I certainly hope so. I love Tom as Spider-Man. I hope there’s more, and I would love nothing more than to be involved. But at this point, we don’t know.

Since McKenna and Sommers have been involved in every MCU Spider-Man movie thus far, they would more than likely be asked back if Sony and Marvel decide to move forward with a fourth installment. Since No Way Home’s debut, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that a Spider-Man 4 movie is in active development, though whether or not Holland will be back is unclear. The actor recently hinted he may be ready to move on from his career-defining role.

No Way Home’s ending provided a suitable conclusion to the Homecoming trilogy if they chose to end it there, but it could also be viewed as a blank canvas for the franchise to continue Peter Parker’s story in any way they chose. Considering the movie’s mid-credits tease featuring Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock leaving some symbiote behind in the MCU, Venom will likely factor heavily into Spider-Man 4. Since Peter is at a low point at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, he would be a perfect host for the infamous alien symbiote, fulfilling Holland’s desire to play Spider-Man as a villain.
