Christopher Nolan’s next movie, Oppenheimer, is his first project based on a real person, and it can deliver on the great potential of his biggest unmade movie. Christopher Nolan has become one of the most respected names in the film industry and his projects always generate a lot of anticipation, and he has rightfully earned all that. Throughout his career as a filmmaker, Nolan has explored different genres – from mystery thriller with Memento to war film with Dunkirk and even superhero with the Dark Knight trilogy – and while he’s often associated with the sci-fi world, his next project is going in a different direction.
Titled Oppenheimer and starring Cillian Murphy, it tells the true story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, a theoretical physicist and the wartime head of the Los Alamos Laboratory. Due to his role in the Manhattan Project, the World War II undertaking that developed the first nuclear weapons, he’s credited as one of the “fathers of the atomic bomb”. Once the war was over, Oppenheimer became chairman of the General Advisory Committee of the United States Atomic Energy Commission and lobbied for international control of nuclear power to avoid nuclear proliferation and a nuclear arms race with the Soviet Union, and he later opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb. Also starring in Oppenheimer are Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., and Matt Damon.
Although Dunkirk is based on historical events, Oppenheimer is the first time Nolan explores the story of a real-life character, which is something he was going to do years ago with an ambitious project about Howard Hughes. Nolan has a couple of unmade projects to his name, and back in the early 2000s, following the success of Insomnia, he began working on a Howard Hughes biographical movie that would have seen Jim Carrey in the lead role. However, the project was left aside as Martin Scorsese was also working on a Howard Hughes movie – The Aviator, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and so Nolan moved on to other types of stories, mostly sci-fi ones with time as the central theme.
Nolan’s Howard Hughes movie was reportedly focused on the final, chaotic years of Hughes’ life, which make it his most interesting unmade project (and even more as it had Jim Carrey as the lead, which would have been a very different role for him at the time). Now, Oppenheimer can deliver on the potential of the unmade Hughes movie, as it’s also based on a real-life figure and one who was a brilliant but flawed genius whose work had a massive impact on human history. Oppenheimer, then, will show how Nolan tackles the story of an actual historical figure rather than making a straight biopic, which is something new and different from what he has done so far.
Oppenheimer is also giving the audience a break from Nolan’s sci-fi movies, especially after the heaviness and complexity of Tenet, so it’s going to be a reset for both him and the audience, and will show a different side of his career. With Christopher Nolan’s signature narrative and visual style, and with the actors cast so far, Oppenheimer looks quite promising, and it might be the closest fans will get to see Nolan adapting the story of a real-life figure, as it seems unlikely that his Howard Hughes project will happen now.
