Nvidia RTX Voice Explained How To Remove Distracting Background Noise

Supercharged computing developer Nvidia recently announced the rolling out of several new GPUs (graphics processing units) as well as other technologies, including low latency gaming monitors and an AI powered live streaming app. Of the AI technology Nvidia is currently testing and developing, its RTX Voice application offers promising developments for removing background noise from various audio rich environments.

Having developed optimized gaming solutions since the nineties, Nvidia has a long timeline of products that continually push the performance needle forward. It has since expanded from GPUs into AI solutions and is now also focusing on live-stream gaming technologies. Originally announced this past April before the debut of its new GeForce RTX series of GPUs, the RTX Voice app is a new plugin that utilizes Nvidia GPUs and AI capabilities to remove distracting background noise from live-streams, voice chats, and video conferences. RTX Voice also suppresses incoming background noise and other sounds such as keyboard typing from other players, making the audio easier to understand. While still in beta since April, this app is available for free download and Nvidia encourages its customers to provide feedback.

According to Nvidia’s website, RTX Voice essentially uses AI technology to add a virtual microphone and speakers within a customer’s system. Once installed, it can be selected in most of the popular apps for live streaming, gaming, and video conferencing such as Discord, Skype, Zoom, and Streamlabs to name a few. Like any comparable audio processing algorithm, RTX Voice does require a portion of system resources, but where many similar apps utilize the CPU, Nvidia claims this algorithm shifts the workload away from the CPU and onto any RTX series GPU. That being said, Nvidia has limited this feature to the latest generation of GPUs that debuted before the lot announced this week. Therefore, anyone with a graphics card that’s not part of the GeForce RTX or Quadro RTX series, the Voice app may not be available… for now.

How To Use RTX Voice To Its Full Capability

If you want to try out RTX Voice, you can download the beta version of the app on Nvidia’s website right now. Once installed, you’ll need to configure it to your PC’s headset and microphone. To turn RTX Voice on, you have the choice to click the ‘remove background noise’ box for either the microphone, incoming audio, or both. From there, you will simply need to change the settings for any and every specific app you wish to use it with, by selecting ‘Nvidia RTX Voice’ as the input/output. The choice to remove background noise is particularly effective for video conference calls and for gaming with others. An added bonus is the background noise from other chat members is removed from your incoming audio without anyone on the other end having to purchase or install any graphics cards of their own.

While RTX Voice is currently only available as a beta and exclusively to more recent graphics cards, the technology offers a potential glimpse into the future of digital communication through both live-streaming and videoconferencing. Since the announcement of RTX Voice in April, Nvidia has applied the same AI audio technologies to its recently announced Broadcast App, which utilizes these features amongst others for live-streaming at home. Beta or not, Nvidia has clearly already seen potential in RTX Voice by integrating into other forms of its tech moving forward. Community members will have to see what their feedback leads to, what a finalized RTX Voice app will look like, and if it will eventually become more backwards compatible with older Nvidia GPUs.
