Old Man Logan Gets Prequel All About Hawkeye

Marvel is all set to premiere a new comic book series featuring its superhero archer, Hawkeye, set as a prequel to the beloved Old Man Logan. The aptly titled Old Man Hawkeye will be 12 issues that follow the marksman on a journey set five years before the events in Old Man Logan. The series will be written by Ethan Sacks, a Daily News alum, and illustrated by Maro Checchetto, who is known for his recent work on Star Wars: Captain Phasma.

“Old Man Hawkeye is, on its own terms, an epic story,” Marvel Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso said. “Readers will gain insight into previously established characters, explore new corners of the Wasteland, meet new characters, and discover exciting Easter eggs all throughout Clint’s journey.”

The original Old Man Logan series, which launched in 2008, was written by Mark Millar and illustrated by Steve McNiven. The series took place 50 years into an alternate future where Wolverine was tricked into killing the X-Men by Mysterio. Hawkeye was Wolverine’s partner in the road trip adventure. The sharp-shooting archer does not have any powers, but uses his wit and aim with a bow and arrow to help him survive. Sacks told the New York Daily News that it will continue to explore the world established in Old Man Logam, saying “This is a pretty rich world that we’ve only seen a little part of,”

The new series will follow Clint/Hawkeye’s life in a world where Marvel’s villains have once again overthrown the Avengers, leaving very few survivors. On his journey, Hawkeye will come up against a few familiar faces, including Venom, and venture into realms that are largely unknown to readers.

“In this story, he’s losing his vision and that sort of forces him to confront something really horrible that happened to him personally 45 years, and go on his own hero’s journey while he still can,” Sacks explained. “It’s very much like a ticking clock that’s forcing him into action.”

The series is the second project that Sacks has written for Marvel. He also wrote an eight-page story featuring the Daily Bugle in the third issue of Marvel’s Secret Empire: Brave New World. The issue was released earlier this year. Sacks, who has been in the newspaper industry for more than 20 years, sees writing for Marvel as a dream come true and recalls being a massive fan of Hawkeye.

“My mom always used to say I spent far too much money on comic books,” Sacks said. “But look at me now.”

The first issue of Old Man Hawkeye will be released in January, before becoming a 12-issue monthly series.
