Golden Globe and Academy Award-winning actress Olivia Colman is arguably one of the most sought-after performers in recent times. Colman, who has gained mainstream popularity thanks to her starring roles in The Favourite and the third and fourth seasons of The Crown, has also been a part of various ensemble-driven films including the likes of Hot Fuzz, The Lobster, Murder On The Orient Express, and so on.

When it comes to television, her major roles apart from The Crown include appearances in Broadchurch, Fleabag, Flowers, and The Night Manager. As for this year, the actress has been earning raves for the British drama The Father for which she has also received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. 10 The Favourite (2018) – 7.5

Having collaborated with Yorgos Lanthimos for a small role in The Lobster, Colman starred as the British monarch Queen Anne in his next feature The Favourite. A period black comedy, the film delves into the conflict of interests between two aides of the Queen (Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone) as they strive to get the latter’s attention and win her love.

Colman’s portrayal of the moody and unstable ruler won her several accolades at all major awards ceremonies while showcasing both her comedic and dramatic prowess.

9 Tyrannosaur (2011) – 7.6

Impressively directed by actor Paddy Considine, Tyrannosaur established Olivia Colman’s repute as a film actor while garnering a World Jury Award at Sundance for her performance. The Irish drama stars Peter Mulligan as a man battling his inner demons and uncontrollable rage who seeks redemption when he meets a Christian charity shop worker called Hannah (Colman).

As Hot Fuzz’s ensemble boasts several popular British actors, Olivia Colman has a supporting role as PC Doris Thatcher, a Sanford policewoman. Other cast members included Bill Nighy, Timothy Dalton, and Tyrannosaur filmmaker Paddy Considine.

7 Les Misérables (2018) – 7.8

One of the many adaptations of Victor Hugo’s French classic, Les Misérables, the six-part BBC miniseries follows a plot that’s faithful to its source material, delving into ex-prisoner Jean Valjean (Dominic West) and his redemption as several characters’ lives mingle during a turbulent period of French history.

Colman stars in four episodes as Madame Rosalie Thénardier, one of the secondary antagonists in the original novel. She, along with her husband is shown as owning an inn where they cheat their customers while also resorting to thievery and blackmailing.

6 The Night Manager (2016) – 8.1

Having won the Golden Globe for her supporting performance, The Night Manager is one of many miniseries Olivia Colman has been involved in. Inspired by the John Le Carre-authored novel of the same name, the miniseries revolves around Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston), the titular night manager of a Cairo hotel who’s hired to gain intel on an illegal arms dealer’s (Hugh Laurie) activities.

Olivia Colman has a chief role as Angela Burr, the manager of a British government task force who assigns Pine with his tasks that unleash his own personal history. All three leads of the show were heavily praised by critics and bagged the Golden Globe in each of their categories.

5 Flowers (2016-2018) – 8.2

At two seasons and twelve episodes, Flowers makes for an easy binge for all Olivia Colman fans. The beauty about the actress is her versatility in both comedies and dramas. Belonging to the former category, Flowers is a black comedy sitcom that covers the bizarre Flowers family.

Music teacher Deborah Flowers (Colman) and children’s author Maurice Flowers (Julian Barratt) play a couple on the brink of divorce, as their adult twins deal with issues of their own. Their subsequent interactions yield tragicomic gold.

4 The Father (2021) – 8.2

Even though The Father is currently being hailed for its powerhouse lead performance by Anthony Hopkins (with some calling it the best of his career), Olivia Colman is also continuing her streak of universally-acclaimed films, playing Hopkins’ daughter. The veteran British actor stars as an aging man whose memory and existence are slowly fading away.

While his daughter volunteers to help him out, the so-called ‘father’ denies all help and wishes to dwell in solitude. The result is a disturbingly real portrayal of old age that gets scarier and more real towards the third act.

3 The Crown (2016 – ) – 8.4

Having played British monarchs previously, Olivia Colman seemed like an easy fit for a demanding role like that of Queen Elizabeth II in the third and fourth seasons of The Crown, having inherited the acting throne from her predecessor Claire Foy. While Foy’s younger Elizabeth was more determined and passionate, Colman’s portrayal brings about a feeling of discontent and hopelessness.

By this time of the show, viewers see her dissatisfaction with her troubled family, the changing political nature of Britain, and her question of her own rule in moments of fragility. The result is a somewhat humanized version of the Queen.

2 Broadchurch (2013-2017) – 8.4

Consisting of three hard-hitting seasons, Broadchurch clearly elevates the formulaic trope of serial crime and police procedural dramas towards a more grueling and intense extent that can be comparable to modern trendsetters in the genre like True Detective. Even though the first season builds up with the investigation of a child’s murder by two police detectives (Colman and David Tennant), the same murder continues to haunt them as can be seen from the subsequent storylines.

Rather than just focusing on the impact of this aftermath on the detectives, Broadchurch also leaves enough space to understand the parents’ trauma.

1 Fleabag (2016-2019) – 8.7

Arguably one of her most antagonistic characters, Olivia Colman’s Godmother is a pretentious, judgmental, and arrogant artist and stepmother to Fleabag (Phoebe Waller-Bridge). Even though she has a smile on her face almost every time, she still harbors a lot of dissatisfaction with Fleabag’s reckless behavior and lifestyle.

Eventually, Fleabag rants her heart out in the final episodes, making her hatred towards Godmother evident. Even though Fleabag is chiefly writer/lead actress Phoebe Bridge’s magnum opus, Colman proves to be a worthy villain adding to the protagonist’s list of never-ending problems.
