Once Upon a Time’s Gideon must face a constant battle between good and evil and his character is shrouded in mystery. Here are some things to know.

Towards the end of Once Upon A Time’s run, the character of Gideon is introduced and his storyline becomes a prominent part of the sixth season. He is the son of Belle French and Mr. Gold, and to protect him, she sends him away with the Blue Fairy. Unfortunately, he is captured by the Black Fairy and becomes a pawn for her in her quest to kill Emma Swan.

Throughout the season, Gideon has to fight with his desire to be the good person that his parents know he can be and the dark control that the Black Fairy keeps him under. His character is shrouded in mystery and mysticism as his intentions are eventually made clear.

10 Named After His Mother’s Favorite Book Protagonist

Gideon Gold comes into the world already promised to Hades because of a deal he made with Rumplestiltskin. When he is born, his mother, Belle French, names him after the protagonist of her favorite book, Her Handsome Hero.

The protagonist of the novel has to face off against an evil sorcerer. The storyline is very similar to Gideon’s own journey, as he needs to face off against the Black Fairy, who kidnaps and raises him as her own minion.

9 Grows Up To Be A Scholar

Gideon is destined to kill Emma Swan. However, during the Final Battle, the curse over him is broken and he is turned back into a baby, thus giving him a second chance at life with his parents.

In season 7, after years of traveling with his parents, he decides to become a scholar (like his mother) and attend Elphame Academy. He reveals it to his parents while he is feverishly looking through books in the family library.

8 Based On The God Morpheus

One of Gideon’s aliases is “Morpheus.” He first appears in one of his mother’s dreams before his birth and warns her to be careful around Rumplestiltskin. The character is based on the Greek God of Dreams.

His character is described as being, “equally good at reading people as he is at hiding his own agenda.” This is revealed when he appears in Emma’s visions, shortly after his birth, and kills her in a duel. He also comes to share his mother’s dream world.

7 His Mother Is The Reason He Rebelled

After he is kidnapped by the Black Fairy, he is trained in black magic and becomes her adopted child. However, after many years, he finally begins to rebel against her and, to ensure his loyalty, she rips out his heart.

His mother is the reason that he mustered up the good in him to defy the Black Fairy. He tells his parents that the Black Fairy “failed. Because … I always remembered you, mother. I tried to follow your example.”

6 His Name Is Symbolic

Besides being named after a novel protagonist, Gideon’s name has a deeper meaning. It is a Hebrew name that means “destroyer” or “cutter down.” This name plays a lot into his journey. He is prophesied to kill Emma Swan, who is supposed to be a Savior.

He is also trained in many forms of magic that can be used for nefarious purposes, including transformation, telekinesis, and transportation.

5 His Reveal Was Planned

In an interview with EW, executive producers/creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis not only revealed that Gideon was the hooded figure in Emma’s visions, but that that had been the plan all along. Horowitz mentioned that “It wasn’t a decision like, ‘Who are we going to put under the hood?’ It was about designing the season to reach that point.”

Horowitz also added that the reveal went way beyond just answering the surface level question of who was behind the hood and was the lead into an important storyline within that season.

4 Portrayed At Multiple Ages Throughout One Episode

In the season 7 episode, “Beauty,” Mr. Gold and Belle are seen to be leaving a peaceful life, with Gideon now one year old. When Gideon turns 18, he decides to leave for college, while his parents dry to get rid of The Dark One’s dagger. At the end of the episode, Gideon returns for his mother’s funeral.

Throughout the episode, “Beauty,” Gideon is portrayed by four different actors at different stages of his life. He is portrayed as a baby, a one-year-old, an 18-year-old (Anton Starkman), and as an adult (Gilles Matthey).

3 Part Of An Extensive Family Tree

Like many of the characters in the series, Gideon is part of an expansive family tree. He is the son of Belle French and Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold/Weaver (depending on the universe). His half-brother is Neal Cassidy/ Baelfire, who marries Emma Swan.

The Black Fairy, although she adopts him as a child, is actually his grandmother (the mother of Rumplestiltskin). Through Emma Swan, he is connected to the Charmings, Snow White, and David Nolan, as well as their grandchild, Henry, and great-grandchild, Lucy.

2 His Grandmother Was A Hero

The women in Gideon’s family have proved, throughout the series, that they are courageous and strong-willed. His grandmother, Colette, married the noble, Sir Maurice, during a time where ogres were posing a threat to the region. In fact, to bring about peace, Belle is almost married off to Lord Legume.

Tragically, before this can happen, ogres storm Maurice’s castle, and Colette allows herself to be killed so that Belle can escape. Although she is never told the whole truth, Belle is told that his mother’s death was heroic and valiant.

1 His Father Has Many Magical Abilities

Even though he is trained in magic by the Black Fairy, magic is very prevalent in Gideon’s family. His father Rumplestiltskin has a wide array of magical abilities. For example, he is very proficient in potion making and “belief”, which is the ability to gently alter reality by believing hard enough.

He is also proficient in the art of Blood Magic (using one’s own blood for spells), age manipulation, and conjuration. Where his abilities are more limited is in fairy magic and transformation.
