One Piece #1000 Reveals Luffys Fiery New Power

Warning: this article contains spoilers for One Piece Chapter #1,000!

Manga series One Piece just celebrated a huge milestone in a big way by revealing a brand new power for its main protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy! In the new chapter, Luffy reveals a quite literally fiery new ability that serves him well in his battle against Kaido and draws from the history of the series and the awesome story so far.

This latest revelation came in Chapter #1,000, which was published online on the Shonen Jump website and is available in English now from Viz Media. One Piece has been running since 1997 and started as a couple of pirate-themed one-shots, but Oda’s career began at the age of seventeen by winning a contest which eventually landed him a job as an assistant at Weekly Shonen Jump. Over the next couple of years, Oda would assist multiple authors including Nobuhiro Watsuki, author of another popular shonen series Rurouni Kenshin, and is now known for his hugely popular One Piece series, which he’s confirmed will likely reach its end in 2025.

The new attack, which is called Gum-Gum Red Roc, allows Luffy to ignite his fist after coating it with a hardening solution for a flaming punch. This isn’t all there is to the attack, however. By combining the attack with Gear Third (which allows Luffy to inflate parts of his body to gigantic proportions), Luffy can hit his target with that much more force, turning his punches into burning meteors for maximum impact! With his allies teleported to safety and the will to fight for Wano simply because it’s his friends’ country, Luffy delivers a smackdown no-one saw coming, repeating his vow to become king of the pirates in answer to the relentless mocking of his enemies. Flashbacks remind the reader of everyone Luffy has known because of Wano Country, making it clear why he’s so heavily invested in winning this battle.

It’s very hard to believe that One Piece has finally reached 1,000 chapters as of early January 2021. That’s 23 and a half years of hard work by the author Eiichiro Oda, who was only 22 when the manga first started serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump. Since it first started its run, One Piece has set the world record for the most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author in 2015 which coincides with the series being the best selling manga of all time, and more recently, the series was voted the greatest manga of all-time in a poll conducted by TV Asahi where over 150,000 residents of Japan voted. It’s moment like this that have won the series such impressive accolades, blending awesome action with beguiling character work so that even when readers are cheering over a new power, it lands with the impact of all the adventures and relationships they’ve seen unfold before it.
