OnePlus Nord 2 Battery Explodes Company Issues Public Apology

A OnePlus Nord 2 smartphone allegedly caught fire inside a woman’s bag while cycling, prompting the company to issue a public apology and conduct an in-depth investigation. This is not the first time that reports of exploding phones have hit the internet. Back in 2016. Samsung’s flagship Galaxy Note 7 started catching fire due to a battery-related flaw and resulted in an issue which soon spiraled into a massive PR disaster for the company. Passengers were even banned from carrying the high-end phone on flights due to the potential of a fire hazard.

Samsung eventually had to issue a wide recall, a move that reportedly cost the company north of five billion dollars. However, it was the reputation hit taken by Samsung that continued to haunt it for years to come. Thermal runaway is one of the most well-known causes for exploding phones, but there are multiple reasons beyond manufacturing defects that can cause a phone to spontaneously burst into flames. Cheap non-certified chargers can be the cause behind excessive battery heating, and poor handling during the replacement process may also lead to accidents. In most cases, bad manufacturing is the principal reason for such accidents.

In the latest case of an exploding phone, smoke started coming out of a bag in which the OnePlus Nord 2 was kept and a blast soon followed, leading to an accident. The Tweet describing the incident has since been deleted, but not before the netizen captured screenshots of the Twitter story and an online debate ensued. In the now-deleted pictures, the phone’s rear panel can be seen to be badly charred, while the surrounding frame was also separated from the rest of the body after bending and breaking. Replying to the Tweet, the official OnePlus Support handle issued an apology and asked the affected party to get in touch.

In a statement provided to Screen Rant, a OnePlus spokesperson said the following:

“Our top priority is the health and safety of our customers. We reached out to the concerned user immediately after hearing about this incident and initiated a thorough internal investigation. The results indicate that the damage to this device was caused by an isolated incident involving external factors and not due to any manufacturing or product issue. However, we remain in close touch with this user and have offered our support to address their concerns and ensure their wellbeing. We would like to assure our customers that our products undergo thorough quality and safety tests, including various levels of pressure and impact tests, to ensure they are up to industry-leading standards and remain safe to use”

Not A Large-Scale Manufacturing Defect

It is unclear if OnePlus initiated a refund or offered a fresh unit as a replacement. Likewise, the company has not gone into the technical details of what actually caused the battery to burst into flames. In fact, the response looks more like an attempt to ensure that its latest phone doesn’t get shrouded in negative publicity. After all, the Nord 2 was launched following feverish anticipation as the successor to the first-gen OnePlus Nord. The latter was India’s top-selling smartphone in the upper mid-tier segment back in Q3 2020 and continued its solid momentum in 2021 as well, as per Counterpoint Research data.

While the burden of making a great successor was already there, the OnePlus Nord 2 also fills a huge gap in OnePlus’ portfolio as the OnePlus 9 series entered an even higher price bracket that was beyond the reach of many buyers. The latest Nord series phone aims to hold on tightly to that price bracket where OnePlus’ flagship killers once reigned supreme. So far, the OnePlus Nord 2 has received generally favorable reviews for its balanced mix of pricing and hardware. The design borrows heavily from the flagship OnePlus 9 series, while the innards include a top-tier MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI SoC, a 50-megapixel camera borrowed from its flagship siblings, and a 4,500 mAh battery that supports 65W fast charging.
