Oppo Teases First Foldable But Leaves Us Wanting More

Chinese smartphone giant, Oppo, has announced that it will unveil its first foldable smartphone next week. The phone will launch as the Oppo Find N and it will be unveiled at its Oppo Inno Day 2021 multi-day event scheduled to begin next week. The manufacturer has also shared teasers of the smartphone.

The foldable smartphone space is currently led by Samsung. This year, it announced the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3, two foldable smartphones which are sold in several markets across the globe. While other manufacturers such as Huawei also launched foldable smartphones, they are plagued by limited availability. For example, the Huawei Mate X2 foldable smartphone is sold only in China.

Oppo has revealed that the Find N is the result of four years of research and development and six generations of prototypes. The first prototype was developed back in April 2018. It adds that when developing the Find N, the goal was to make a phone with a simple and pleasant design, powerful performance, and appropriate weight and size. Oppo boasts that its upcoming foldable ticks all of these boxes. It also claims that it has solved common issues such as a crease in the display and that the Find N’s hinge and display designs are “perhaps the best” available today. For those wondering why it took so long for Oppo’s foldable smartphone to arrive, Pete Lau who doubles as Chief Product Officer of Oppo and CEO of OnePlus, said that the company wanted to launch a product with a great user experience rather than rush to keep up with trends. Oppo has provided an early look at the Find N via a press render and a video teaser shared on Twitter.

A Familiar Design

The Find N has an outward folding design just like that of the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The outer display has rounded corners but also looks like it has a curved edge. It also doesn’t appear to have a tall aspect ratio like Samsung’s foldable. The teaser video shows the phone sporting a gold metal frame with visible antenna lines while the photo above is of a silver variant. The Find N borrows more than a leaf from Samsung’s foldable. There is an indentation that shows Oppo’s phone will pack a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and while the back isn’t visible, the side view hints at three rear-facing cameras.

The spec sheet of the Oppo Find N is still unknown but that should become public knowledge when it is unveiled on December 15, the second day of Oppo Inno Day. There are unconfirmed rumors that Oppo will launch the phone outside China but North America is most likely not on the list as Oppo doesn’t sell its phones in the region. However, the fact that OnePlus’s own CEO is in charge of the product team that worked on the Find N might be a hint of what is to come when OnePlus launches its own foldable smartphone in the future.
