Orlando Bloom Originally Auditioned To Play Lord of the Rings Faramir

Orlando Bloom says that he initially auditioned for the role of Faramir in The Lord of the Rings. The first major role for Bloom, he starred as Legolas across the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy, before returning to the role in two out of three of The Hobbit prequels. While establishing himself as a reliable actor, Bloom notably went on to take a leading role in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, playing swashbuckling blacksmith Will Turner.

Director Peter Jackson’s magnum opus, The Lord of the Rings, is an epic fantasy adventure based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s book series, where the lives of the inhabitants of Middle Earth are threatened by the return of the dark lord Sauron. The task of saving Middle Earth is given to Elijah Wood’s Frodo, who must take a ring of power to Mount Doom to destroy it before it falls into the hands of Sauron and his armies. As well as Wood’s incredible performance as Frodo, the movies starred many established actors, such as Christopher Lee and Ian McKellen, while making stars from the likes of Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan. With some of the richest lore available, thanks to Tolkien’s tireless world-building, the Lord of the Rings has established itself as one of the biggest franchises in history.

During The Independent’s celebration of the 20th anniversary of The Fellowship of the Ring, Bloom recalls how he tried out for a different part before being cast as Legolas. Bloom said that he was called in to tape for Legolas after initially attending the audition for the role of Faramir, who would eventually be played by David Wenham instead. While talking about receiving the call from his agent, Bloom said “it was mind-boggling,” and that he “did not expect to go into a film right out of drama school.” Read the full quote below:

I initially auditioned for Faramir, who would be played by David Wenham. They then call me and want me on tape for Legolas. Then it was another meeting with Peter and Fran. I remember my agent calling me to say I’d got the part and I was jumping up and down in my apartment. It was mind-boggling. I did not expect to go into a film right out of drama school.

While Faramir, brother to Boromir (Sean Bean), plays a smaller but no less vital part in the Lord of the Rings saga, Legolas remains one of the trilogy’s most important characters throughout the films. A member of Frodo’s Fellowship of the Ring, Legolas established himself as a key player in many of the battles fought during the War of the Ring and helped Frodo indirectly throughout his journey to Mordor. While none of Bloom’s acting gigs has proved to be as successful as his time as Legolas, scoring the role was a massive break for the actor, catapulting Bloom to stardom and helping kick-start his now long and varied movie career.

While Jackson has finished with the Lord of the Rings, the franchise will move on without him, returning as a TV show currently slated to premiere in late 2022. The series, which is in development for Amazon, has remained secretive since its announcement, but it’s already become more expensive than the Lord of the Rings movies. While Jackson’s trilogy was certainly big-budget, the success of his movies is attributed to more than just fancy CGI and overblown set-pieces. Amazon can, however, learn from Jackson’s mistakes made with The Hobbit movies, and use modern-day technology to create a truly epic series that does the Lord of the Rings trilogy service. It also has the opportunity to do something truly special, as Amazon’s Lord of the Rings show could help create household names out of up-and-coming actors, just like Jackson’s trilogy did for the likes of Bloom.
