Orlando Bloom Starring in Amazons Carnival Row Series

Orlando Bloom is heading to TV in Carnival Row, a new series from Amazon Studios. In 2013, Amazon Studios began producing televisions shows for their exclusive streaming service. At first, they were only producing comedies and children shows, but in 2015, Amazon expanded their content to dramas.

Since then, the studio has developed several successful shows, including Transparent, The Man in the High Castle, Mozart in the Jungle, and Bosch, all of which are available exclusively on Amazon Prime.

TVLine reports that Amazon has picked up Carnival Row, a show described as a “fantasy noir set in a neo-Victorian city”, with a straight-to-series order. Carnival Row’s first season will consist of eight episodes and will star Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings actor Orlando Bloom, who will also serve as executive producer.

It was reported in May that Teen Wolf executive producer René Echevarria would serve as showrunner with Paul McGuigan (Luke Cage, Sherlock) signing on to direct the pilot. Bloom’s character is Rycroft Philostrate, “a police inspector who risks everything to solve the murder of a faerie showgirl on the titular Carnival Row.”

The description of the show may sound familiar to viewers of Grimm, the NBC series that ran for six seasons; Grimm followed the story of Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli), a police detective in Portland who could see mythological creatures inspired by characters from Grimms’ Fairy Tales. The world of Grimm had the appearance of an ordinary city, but Nick, through his Grimm heritage, was able to recognize that many of Portland’s inhabitants were actually animal-like monsters in disguise. Judging by the description of Carnival Row, it appears that the series will differ in that it will adopt a more fantasy-oriented setting.

Carnival Row will be Orlando Bloom’s first major TV role, but certainly not his first foray into the fantasy genre. The English actor is well-known for his role as the crack-shot Elven archer Legolas in the The L:ord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. The actor also played blacksmith-turned-pirate Will Turner in the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies, as well as the latest installment in the franchise, Dead Men Tell No Tales.
