Orphan 2 Star Isabelle Fuhrman Had Fun Acting Like a Child for Sequel

Orphan: First Kill star Isabelle Fuhrman enjoyed reprising her role in the film’s upcoming second installment. Fuhrman is known for starring in the hit 2009 psychological thriller about a couple who adopts a mysterious girl to cope with the death of their unborn child. She plays Esther, a seemingly innocent nine-year-old who turns out to be a 33-year-old woman with a rare medical condition and a dark past. Orphan became a commercial success when it was released, earning $78 million at the box office against a $20 million budget. A follow-up film entitled Orphan: First Kill was confirmed last year with Fuhrman returning as Esther.

Written by the same writers as the first movie, the second installment is meant to be a prequel rather than a continuation of the original story. The plot gives an insight into Esther’s background, as well as the gruesome events that would lead her to commit a crime. It picks up right after Esther (whose real name is Leena) escapes from an asylum in Estonia by assuming the identity of a wealthy family’s missing daughter. Other actors to join the new cast include Julia Stiles and Rossif Sutherland. Orphan: First Kill is set to be released on Jan. 28, 2022.

In the upcoming prequel, Fuhrman needed to tap into her younger self to portray the notorious orphan girl. In an interview with Slash Film, the former child star revealed that they hired two young actresses to act as her body double. While filming, she spent a lot of time around the girls, which allowed her to revisit her childhood. Fuhrman said that while it has been a challenging project, she found the process to be fun overall. Read her comments below:

For me, what was really lucky is that in order for us to make the movie, we had to hire two young ladies, Kennedy and Sadie Lee, who were me from other angles. And I just got to hang out with them all the time. And I felt really childlike working on the movie, and I felt like it was a great excuse for me to revisit some parts of my childlike self, because instead of finding moments to seem more adult, I had to find more moments to seem more childlike. It was a different challenge.

In 2009’s Orphan, Fuhrman was a 12-year-old girl who played a 33-year-old woman (disguised as a 9-year-old girl). Now, the actress steps back into the role at 24-years-old to play a young Esther. Aside from the help of body doubles, Orphan: First Kill also used a couple of Hollywood tricks such as makeup, prosthetics, and some CGI to de-age Fuhrman. This reversal will definitely be interesting to see in the upcoming horror prequel.

More than its scare tactics, Orphan was praised by audiences for its unsettling plot and how eerie it was to see a child play a murderous and vicious adult. The prequel will no doubt present some shocking twists of its own. With a little over a month before its premiere, Orphan: First Kill is already one of next year’s highly anticipated releases and is expected to match—if not surpass—the success of its predecessor.
