Topper Thornton is one of the antagonists throughout Outer Banks. As Sarah’s boyfriend (and later, ex-boyfriend), most of his actions are done out of jealousy. He has the ability to be charming and sweet but when something doesn’t go his way, he becomes elitist and goes after those who wronged him.
As the series went on in season 2, Topper’s behavior began to change. The angry and jealous young man began showing a softer side. Because of this sudden change, fans are now under the impression that Topper is going to undergo a redemptive arc and become one of the good guys. Nevertheless, Topper sure did get away with villainous behavior before seeing the light.
7 For Starters, He’s A Kook
With the show being narrated by John B., fans are viewing every situation through the eyes of the Pogues (aka the good guys). The Pogues are those who live in “the cut” of the Outer Banks and don’t have the same titles or wealth that those called the Kooks do. No one knows how long the battle between the Kooks and Pogues has been going on, but it’s alive and well in both seasons.
The Kooks are known for bullying the Pogues and using their sense of entitlement to get away with everything. And sadly, Topper is a part of the Kooks and is best friends with one of the worst Kooks of all, Rafe Cameron. Because of his involvement with the Kooks, fans were already led to believe that Topper would be a major antagonist.
6 He Got John B. Fired From His Job
When the Pogues believed they found the Royal Merchant (a sunken ship supposedly holding millions of dollars in gold bars), they needed high-end scuba gear to get a closer look. Since John B. worked on Ward Cameron’s boat, one of the wealthiest boats in the Outer Banks, he snuck on to borrow the gear while no one was around.
The following day, Sarah Cameron caught John B. returning the scuba gear but promised him she wouldn’t tell anyone about it. Unbeknownst to Sarah, her sister Wheezie saw the whole thing and later told Topper about the interaction. Knowing how much Topper loathed John B. and didn’t want his girlfriend, Sarah, around him, he ratted John B. out to Ward. Ward later fired John B. after hearing Topper’s news, making Topper one unlikable character to fans.
5 Topper Became Outwardly Frustrated When Sarah Wasn’t Ready To Sleep With Him
Before Sarah and John B. became one of the best ships in Outer Banks, she was dating Topper. At the start of the series, Sarah and Topper appeared to be perfect together because they were both Kooks and had the same lifestyle. But as time went on, Sarah wasn’t as interested in Topper as he was in her and slowly distanced herself from him. This made Topper hold on tighter.
One of Topper’s biggest complaints with Sarah was that he felt she was playing around with his heart. And when she thought she was ready to lose her virginity to him, she changed her mind. Sadly, Topper did not react to the news well and became frustrated with Sarah. This was something that annoyed fans a lot as it proved that he did not respect or care about her the way he said he did. It also made fans believe that Sarah deserved a lot more than him.
4 He Was Behind The Attack On Pope
Topper was Rafe Cameron’s best friend. But as the battle between the Kooks and the Pogues raged on, Rafe’s character became one of the worst on Outer Banks as he became darker and more murderous. Topper loved his friend but slowly stopped aligning himself with him after an incident with Pope. He saw just how evil Rafe was becoming and how far the war between the Pogues and the Kooks had gone.
A few days after a fight with the Pogues, Rafe and Topper saw Pope (a Pogue) walking by himself. The two jumped Pope and stole the beer he was carrying. While there was a twinge of regret on Topper’s face, he didn’t stop the situation from happening and helped Rafe attack Pope. This fight could have been a turning point for Topper but proved he still had a lot of growing to do.
3 Topper Attempted To Drown John B.
Outer Banks fans believe it was one of John B.’s worst decisions to start a physical fight with Topper at the bonfire. John B. didn’t realize the vendetta Topper had against him at the time and it almost cost John B. his life.
As Topper gained control of the fight, he pushed John B.’s head in the ocean and made a cruel remark about drowning him, just as his father did. John B.’s dad was lost at sea for nine months and was presumed dead, so Topper’s words were lethal to John B. If it weren’t for JJ’s help, John B. may not have made it because Topper showed zero remorse or grief over attempting to drown John B. This moment just seemed to further cement him as a villain.
2 He Pushed John B. Off The Bell Tower
One of John B.’s favorite spots to go to in the Outer Banks was an old bell tower. It was a safe space for him that he didn’t tell many people about. He did, however, tell his new girlfriend, Sarah, about his secret hideaway, which is how she found him when he was on the run from the cops. After Rafe shot Sherrif Peterkin, he framed John B., which led to him running from the law. Unfortunately for John B. and Sarah, Topper followed Sarah to the bell tower and found John B.
Seeing his ex-girlfriend with someone like John B. enraged Topper. The men got into a scuffle, which resulted in John B. falling from an incredible height and injuring himself badly. If it weren’t for Topper, John wouldn’t have fallen or gotten hurt.
1 He Assists The Police In Catching John B.
It’ll be interesting to see how Topper’s personality changes in season 3 once Netflix gives the series a green light for another season. By the end of season 2, he becomes less angry and more loving towards Sarah but still holds resentment towards John B. for dating her.
When John B. was on the run from the cops, he found himself inside Kelce’s home. Kelce was a Kook and close friends with Topper. Topper went over Kelce’s to keep John B. captive until the police arrived. While standing on the other side of the door, Topper tortured John B. by telling him the chase was over and that he was going to jail. For Topper, it didn’t matter if John B. was innocent or guilty, he wanted him behind bars.
