Outlander: 10 Unpopular Opinions About Claire (According To Reddit)

Claire Fraser is one of a kind but not everyone is impressed by her machinations on Reddit where several users express some unpopular opinions.

Claire Fraser, the usually awe-inspiring lead of the epic drama Outlander, doesn’t inspire that awe in everybody, and there are fans out there who readily point out the flaws in the character, or take a stand that goes against the majority of Claire’s adoring fans.

Users have pitched in on Reddit about what they disagree with when it comes to Claire and about her relationship with both her husbands. While strictly in the minority, some of these opinions are compelling and can offer fans a different perspective on their favorite character.

Claire Sticks Her Nose Where It Doesn’t Belong

A rather unpopular opinion on Reddit is given by hslthedream who goes all out to list all the many things that are annoying about Claire. Of these, the primary complaint that stands out is that Claire “sticks her nose into everyone’s business.”

While it is true that Claire does have an opinion about most things, that trait is also what makes her the most empowered and one of the strongest female characters on Outlander. As the protagonist, she is forever active and from her perspective, she does her best to help people and fight against an antiquated 18th century system which brings with it a set of outdated beliefs.

She Is Of A Jealous Temperament

Another important suggestion made by hslthedream that goes against the grain is that Claire is “irrationally jealous.” The fan points out that she got jealous of Lord John Grey simply for harboring feelings for Jamie even though he had done so much for the latter. Moreover, her jealousy towards Sandy, whom Frank had started seeing, seemed meaningless, especially since she herself was in love with Jamie and the open marriage had been her idea.

Yet again, most fans defend Claire by stating that she wasn’t so much jealous of Sandy as she was humiliated by the woman showing up at her graduation party, and in front of young Brianna. Her anger erupted from her perturbation and Frank should have been more considerate about who he was inviting to the house and when.

She’s Selfish

Quetzalcoatlquetzal on Reddit states outright that Claire is “selfish and makes horrible decisions.” To elaborate on his opinion, the fan mentions Claire’s resistance to Jamie fighting the sadistic Black Jack Randall and avenging himself. The fan goes as far as to say that she should have simply stayed in her own time.

Claire had made Jamie promise in season 2 that he would wait a year before killing BJR. Her motive was to ensure that her first husband, Frank, would be born and that whatever tension existed between Jamie and Randall 200 years in the past should not affect Frank Randall in the future. Popularly speaking, in spite of not loving Frank as much as she adored Jamie, she wanted to make sure that he wasn’t simply erased out of existence through no fault of his own.

Claire Is Horrible To Frank

Claire Fraser’s relationship with her 20th century husband Frank is brimming with tension. Redditor BlueKissed vents that Claire returns from “that whirlwind three-year adultery trip and proceeds to almost be intentionally punishing Frank with her coldness”.

While a minority TeamFrank would agree with this opinion, the vast majority of fans out there feel that it was Claire who was the victim of circumstances, having to remain with a man she no longer loved. Furthermore, a lot of Outlander fans believe that Frank got worse and worse as time went by, especially when he planned to take Brianna away from Claire immediately after her graduation.

She Should Not Have Been On The Ship

In season 3, Claire and Jamie embarked upon a grand journey to Jamaica to save Young Ian who had been abducted by the ship Bruja. This fan, paolabp, posts, “I just can’t stand her anymore”, and feels that Claire had no real reason to accompany Jamie on this trip, since she could hardly have been any help to him in finding his nephew.

This goes against the trend of overwhelming support for Claire who ended up saving multiple lives on the Porpoise which had been affected in the worst possible way by typhoid fever. Moreover, even though the young captain of the porpoise had done his best to ensure that Claire couldn’t prevent Jamie’s arrest in Jamaica, she soon found a way to reach her beloved husband.

She Is A Know-it-all

In another rant against the show’s lead protagonist, gypsynikki75 feels “A deep, burning, searing, hot rage of emotion” whenever Claire opens her mouth. According to this fan’s highly controversial opinion, Claire only wants to dominate weaklings. Despite being culturally out of place 200 years in the past, she makes efforts to boost herself as all-knowing, rants the fan on Reddit.

While it is true that Claire Fraser has a tendency to dominate, it must be noted that she has been thrust into the most fantastic of situations and had to make herself heard in a society that neither understood nor tried to understand someone like her. With her modern beliefs, refinement, and the knowledge of history that helped her navigate the treacherous waters of the past, she might have come across as a know-it-all but indeed she knew things that the people of the time couldn’t have known.

Claire Ruined Jamie’s Life

In an explosive opinion, Reddit user contemptuouscrayon suggests that Claire is a terrible person “that has ruined Jaime’s life at every turn.” From making him an enemy the first thing after landing in France, to forcing him to recount his horrifying experiences inside Wentworth prison–one of the saddest experiences Jamie Fraser had been through on Outlander–the user feels that Claire wasn’t always good for Jamie.

Given how millions of fans around the world love and root for the couple, this is naturally a very unpopular opinion. Claire isn’t a perfect individual by any means but she has been by Jamie’s side like a pillar of strength, and turned around the young Scots’ life in a way he could never have imagined.

She Can’t Stay Content With Her Life

Redditor awkwardOttakam feels that Claire finds it difficult to be content with her life “without causing trouble for anyone, behaving appropriately in situations even if she doesn’t like it.” Claire and Jamie appear to seek out trouble wherever they go, often endangering other lives, comments the fan.

The lovers do often find that they had bitten off more than they could chew but once again, they do it with the best of intentions, usually to help people or correct a system that was archaic and often inhuman. The popular opinion is that they are doing the best they can under unique circumstances and putting to use their, and especially Claire’s, knowledge of future events.

Trying To Break Up Alex Randall & Mary Hawkins Wasn’t Fair

In season 2, Claire tried to break up the fragile Mary Hawkins, one of the low-key heroes on Outlander, and Alex Randall, Black Jack Randall’s younger brother, when they were in love. Redditor RedQueen283 feels that this was “straight up evil”. Claire was, according to this fan, condemning the soft-hearted, innocent Mary to life with a rapist, i.e. BJR.

However, as the comments section would suggest, most fans see Claire’s efforts here as proof that she did care for Frank at some level. Further, she wasn’t at that point privy to the knowledge that Frank wasn’t the direct descendant of BJR but of his brother Alex, and tried to stir the circumstances such that Frank wasn’t wiped out of existence. She also knew that BJR would die pretty soon, which meant that Mary wouldn’t be condemned for life after all.

Hating Claire Fraser

Finally, mentat2017 simply hates Claire, and sees her as manipulative “and apparently not bright enough to realize she can’t change the past despite repeated failure…”

To each his own, but most fans would disagree, stating that Claire has achieved the unthinkable on more than one occasion and is inspiring despite her flaws. She is, most likely, aware by now that she cannot change the past but does her best to keep her loved ones safe even amidst the impending chaos she knows she cannot prevent.
