Like Vikings, The Last Kingdom, and Peaky Blinders, Outlander is one of the best historical-fiction dramas to date. Not only do the critics praise the exceptional chemistry the cast have but a lot of credit is also given to the writers for the way they approach sensitive and taboo topics.

However, there is one question that not a lot of people discuss: does the show live up to the expectations of the book readers? Are the fight scenes exactly how the readers pictured them, or do they feel anti-climatic in a sense?

10 Disappointed: Frank v. Claire

Outlander 5 Fights That Lived Up To Fans Expectations (& 5 That Let Them Down)

With the show only scheduled to have 10-15 episodes, everyone knows the novels have had to be condensed. This meant that the tv writers had to omit a lot from the twenty years Claire and Frank spent together. As a result, fans never got to fully feel the tension that built between Claire and Frank.

The show also made Frank a “Gary Stu” when the books portrayed him as anything but. By taking his flaws away, it feels like the show doesn’t account for Frank’s faults and blames Claire for their marriage collapsing.

9 Good: Jamie v. Dougal Showdown

Outlander 5 Fights That Lived Up To Fans Expectations (& 5 That Let Them Down)

For two years, the writers had not only been building up to the Battle of Culloden but they had also been building to Jamie’s confrontation with Dougal. As everyone knows, Dougal was a big hindrance in Claire and Jamie’s side. The War Chieftain had done everything imaginable to prevent Jamie from becoming the Laird of Castle Leoch.

He had also made it clear he would do anything to see the Jacobite rebellion through to the end. So when he overheard Claire and Jamie’s plans, everyone knew what was coming. However, what the book lovers didn’t expect was for Claire to help Jamie deliver the final blow. Strange enough, it was more fitting this way.

8 Disappointed: Murtagh v. Duke Sandringham

Outlander 5 Fights That Lived Up To Fans Expectations (& 5 That Let Them Down)

The Duke of Sandringham was one villain the fans couldn’t wait to see the back of. After discovering he was responsible for Mary Hawkins’ rape and planned attack on Claire, the viewers couldn’t wait to see the Duke get his comeuppance. The fans’ hatred was further cemented when they realized he had reneged on his promise to help Jamie.

While the death of Sandringham occurred the exact same way as it did in the novels, some fans were a bit disappointed. Particularly because it felt like Murtagh’s actions served to traumatize Mary even more by throwing a decapitated head her way. The poor girl had already witnessed too much trauma.

7 Good: Battle Of Alamance

Since Murtagh died at Culloden in the books, it was clear the tv writers had deviated from them when they revealed him to be the leader of the Regulators. It also meant that the Battle of Alamance would have another emotional layer as the viewers expected Murtagh’s death.

Ultimately, the fans’ worst fears came true when Murtagh died at the hands of the militia. However, the viewers were satisfied that Murtagh’s exit involved him saving Jamie’s life a final time. It was also a great plot device since it briefly distracted the book readers from remembering Roger’s fate at the end.

6 Disappointed: Rescuing Claire From Lionel Brown

Outlander 5 Fights That Lived Up To Fans Expectations (& 5 That Let Them Down)

The writers once again deviated from the novels in the season 5 finale when Lionel Brown and his crew kidnapped Claire. It wasn’t surprising that Jamie and the rest of the Fraser-MacKenzie clan wasted no time in suiting up to go and rescue her. However, a lot of fans were disappointed with the way the confrontation unfolded.

For instance, after Jamie and his men kill all of Lionel’s men, a lot of viewers were confused as to why he would allow Lionel to live when he was responsible for most of Claire’s torment. It also seemed pointless to bring him back to Frasers’ Ridge only to have Marsali kill him. Surely Claire should have had a say in what happened to him too?

5 Good: Wentworth Prison Break

Outlander 5 Fights That Lived Up To Fans Expectations (& 5 That Let Them Down)

After witnessing the brutal torture Jamie suffered at the hands of Black Jack Randall, fans couldn’t wait for Claire, Murtagh, and the other MacKenzies to break him out of prison. While the book didn’t exactly divulge in the prison break, the show gave the viewers one of the greatest moments ever…

…Black Jack Randall getting trampled on by a herd of cattle. The fact that the clansmen have also outwitted the redcoats by getting Jamie out undetected made it sweeter.

4 Disappointed: Geillis’ Death

Outlander 5 Fights That Lived Up To Fans Expectations (& 5 That Let Them Down)

For one, book Geillis tried to kill Jamie as she shot him for trying to interfere with the ritual. Book Claire didn’t feel guilty for it either as she recognized she had killed Geillis after her maternal instincts kicking in. The fact that it was played off as an accident seemed to take something away from Claire’s character.

3 Good: Battle Of Prestonpans

Outlander 5 Fights That Lived Up To Fans Expectations (& 5 That Let Them Down)

The Battle of Prestonpans was another action-packed fight that saw a lot of casualties on both sides. Since Claire had already revealed the Jacobites would win the battle at Prestonpans, the writers of the show deviate from the novels a bit to surprise the book fanatics as well.

Ultimately, they succeeded in doing so when Angus unexpectedly died saving Rupert’s life. What made it even more emotional was that Claire could only watch on helplessly as it was too late for her to do something.

2 Disappointed: Showdown With Bonnet

Outlander 5 Fights That Lived Up To Fans Expectations (& 5 That Let Them Down)

While Stephen Bonnet’s arc on the show unfolded the same way it did in the novels, fans would have liked it if the writers had deviated from the plot a little. Considering the viewers had witnessed how much he had tormented Brianna and the Frasers, it seemed anti-climatic that he wasn’t killed on the beach.

It also seemed like he got off too easy when Brianna granted him a merciful death. After everything he did, Bonnet deserved to suffer and face his worst nightmare…

1 Good: Battle Of Culloden

If one asks what fight sequence was the best, a lot would say the Battle of Culloden. This battle sort of felt like the end of part 1 since a lot of storylines culminated here. Claire was sent back to the twentieth century, Jamie and Randall had their showdown, and the fans were forced to say goodbye to a lot Frasers and MacKenzies.

While the events of the battle unfolded differently in the books, there was one thing the fans were glad to see. Jamie delivering the final blow to the sadistic Black Jack Randall. It was satisfying that Jamie managed to get some closure.
