Outlander star Caitríona Balfe says that her character will be at her most vulnerable during season 6. Balfe plays Claire in the historical drama, which is based on the ongoing novels of the same name by Diana Gabaldon. The adaptation, which premiered on Starz in 2014, began with a focus on Balfe’s Second World War nurse as she finds herself transported back in time to 1743. There, she falls in love with the Highland warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), who gets drawn into the Jacobite uprising soon after. Though the cast has changed through the series’ run, with both regular departures and new arrivals, the centrality of Claire and Jamie has remained consistent throughout.

It was recently announced that Outlander season 6 will premiere on March 6, 2022 across all Starz platforms. Returning with an extended episode, the historical drama will air in the UK on the same day-and-date via STARZPLAY. Given that the last installment of Outlander wrapped up in May of last year, it will be almost two years since viewers last saw Claire and Jamie, including the graphic season 5 finale storyline that generated a lot of debate online.

In an interview with Elle to promote both Outlander season 6 and the acclaimed film Belfast, Balfe speaks about the two projects and what her different characters have in common. She also discusses what it was like to work on the drama series for long days while pregnant. As it related to what viewers should expect from the coming episodes, and the fallout from Outlander season 5, the actor notes that fans will see a different side to Claire and reveals that the character’s usual coping mechanisms won’t work as well. Balfe’s quote is included below:

The events of the end of season 5 have really destabilized Claire in a way that we’ve never seen before. I think Claire has always been able to compartmentalize things and move on, with that very 1940s can-do attitude. She packs things up in a little box, she parks it, and she gets on with the rest of her life. And we see that she’s unable to use that coping mechanism, to get through this particular incident. So it’s really lovely to actually finally unpick her in a way, and find her core vulnerabilities. I think it’s the only way she can properly heal, because she has to find a new way of coping. She has to find a new way through. There’s really great stuff for Claire this season. We’ve got some great directors back, and I think we’re playing around again with the style of the show, so that’s really exciting.

Balfe is referencing the events that concluded Outlander season 5. Drawing from one of the books’ most upsetting storylines, the final episode chronicles a series of horrific events that happen to Claire: She’s kidnapped, beaten, and gang-raped by men who seek to punish her for her independent mindset. While Claire is rescued by her family and Jamie, and they get revenge on the attackers, the traumas she experiences are plain to witness. She imagines herself and Jamie in the 1960s as they enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner, which is juxtaposed with the harrowing reality of what Claire is dealing with in the moment, as the camera cuts between her torture and her mental escape.

Some of Claire’s shift can be seen in the opening credits of Outlander season 6, which shows Claire holding a rifle. The Starz series has been praised for the way it depicts sexual violence, knowing when to shift perspectives and when to pull back from portraying the horrors of abuse and torture. This is in contrast to other pieces of pop culture, which have sometimes glamorized rape scenes or otherwise relied on them for pure shock value. Balfe’s latest comments indicate that the show will continue its efforts to find the right balance when it returns.
