Starz original series Outlander had a strong start back in 2014. The first season was well-received by both critics and fans. The show’s intriguing and creative plot attracted plenty of viewers that have remained loyal ever since.

The first season saw Claire falling through time to 1740s Scotland just after her husband had returned from Wolrd War II. She immediately received hostility from the Scottish people who thought she might be an English spy. She thus had to constantly come up with quick ways to survive and fit in. In the twelfth episode, Jamie took Claire to his family home. Jamie hadn’t visited the place for about four years so his sister Jenny wasn’t so happy to see him. He found out that she had gotten married to his former friends and that she had a son. She was pregnant too.

He decided to stay despite Claire’s objections. He also attempted to take control of the estate but Jenny wasn’t planning on making it so easy for him. Later on, Jamie avoided neutralized a clash with redcoats before it turned deadly. He then made peace with Jenny and the two become sibling goals.

When Jamie hears that Claire has been arrested by Black Jack Randall in the 9th episode, he organizes a successful rescue mission but he is totally upset with her. He doesn’t understand why she put herself in danger by going to the woods in the first place.

The two argue before he punishes her for putting her own life as well as those of many people in danger. He hits her bare buttocks (what the hell?) before the two head back to Castle Leoch. There, Colum MacKenzie isn’t too happy to see them.

By the third episode, Claire was desperately searching for ways to earn her freedom. She put in plenty of effort as the clan healer of the MacKenzie so that she could be set free. However, she unknowingly created a reverse effect by making herself too valuable for them to let go.

When she saved Mrs. Fitzgibbons’ nephew from poisoning, the clan decided to keep her, believing she was a miracle worker. Initially, Father Bain had wrongly concluded that the boy was possessed. And after curing the boy yet the priest failed, his jealousy grew and the two became enemies.

In the fourth episode, Claire plotted her escape after she had studied the woods well. She had made up her mind to flee during the clan meeting at Leoch, but she ended up bumping into Jamie who talked her out of it by making her realize the flaws in her plan.

The two then headed back to the castle where clan members were making an oath of loyalty. Jamie forced himself to do so too. The next day, Claire earned the respect of Dougal after she treated a man who had been injured during a boar hunt.

Claire accompanied Dougal and the other clansmen in their rent collection journey in the fifth episode. But she wasn’t happy with how they treated the villagers, leading her to clash with Dougal. The men also tried to ignore her as they bonded over campfires.

A red coat also tried to rescue Claire from the Scots but he was unsuccessful. Claire later learned that the money being collected was to be used to fund the Jacobite army. This was the military wing being set up to help the Scots achieve independence from England.

The eighth episode saw Frank still trying to find Claire in the present day (1946). He decided to go to the standing stones one last time and called out Claire. In the past, Claire was near the stones too and she could hear Frank calling. But before she could run for the stones, she was captured.

The English troops took her to Fort William where a showdown with Black Jack Randall ensued. Randall also tried to rape her before Jamie showed up. Elsewhere, Frank was considering moving on with his life after realizing he might never see Claire again.

In the second last episode of the season, Black Jack Randall made his way to Wentworth Prison to partake in one of his hobbies—torturing. He tortured Jamie so that he could submit to him. This was something Jamie wasn’t willing to do until circumstances changed.

Claire who had been denied a chance to visit Jamie finally found a way to get to his cell but she was caught by Black Jack Randall. Knowing Claire was in danger, Jamie allowed himself to be sexually assaulted by Randall so that Randall could late Claire go.

After being advised to become a Scot to protect herself from Black Jack Randall, Claire married Jamie in Episode 7. Later. the two tried to know each other better to make their marriage seem more genuine then they realized they really liked each other.

The two ended up consummating their marriage the night of the wedding but Claire was weighed down with many thoughts. She still kept thinking about Frank. She also felt that the unfortunate circumstances had forced her to become an adulteress.

The sixth episode saw the redcoats taking Claire to General Lord Thomas, who swore to provide her a safe route to Inverness together with Black Jack Randall. However, when the Lord Thormas departed, the suspicious Randall tried to find out why Claire was really is in Scotland.

Dougal then tried to take Claire away, but Black Jack Randall insisted on keeping her so that he’d take her to Fort William the next day. Randall later allowed her to leave on the condition that she returns the following day. Dougal then advised Claire to become a Scot to avoid all the trouble.

1 The Devil’s Mark (9.4)

Season one’s eleventh episode was as close to perfect as a TV episode can get. In it, Claire and Geillis were charged with witchcraft. Ned Gowan defended them but unfortunately for them, a couple of witnesses testified against them. As a result, a guilty verdict was reached.

Geillis confessed to being solely responsible for the crimes shortly after, thus exonerating Claire. This was also the first time that Claire realized Geillis was from the future too. This happened after she noticed a smallpox vaccine scar on the shoulder of Geillis.
