Overpowered D&D Spells Ability Clarified By Wizards of the Coast

Wizards of the Coast has clarified the effects of a Dungeons & Dragons spell, called Silvery Barbs, which many fans believe is overpowered for its level. The Silvery Barbs spell was introduced in Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos, but information about the spell was released early, via previews of the book.

Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos is a D&D sourcebook that integrates the magical Strixhaven University from Magic: The Gathering into the lore of D&D. Strixhaven is broken up into five different colleges, one of which is called Silverquill. The students of Silverquill learn how to use magic to weaponize their words, either by strengthening their allies, or tearing down their opponents. Each of the five colleges received a signature spell in Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos, with Silverquill students gaining access to Silvery Barbs. It was quickly determined that Silvery Barbs is far too strong, as it’s a first-level spell that is cast using a reaction, forces an enemy to reroll one action, and gives advantage to an ally’s roll.

One reason why fans thought Silvery Barbs is too strong is that its effect might be able to bypass Legendary Resistances. In D&D, powerful monsters have a limited number of Legendary Resistances they can use each day, which allow them to automatically succeed on a saving throw. A new Sage’s Advice column on the official D&D website has confirmed that the new spell does not interact with this powerful mechanic, assuaging at least some fears about the spell’s power level.

According to the column, Silvery Barbs does not avoid Legendary Resistances. If a monster uses Legendary Resistance, then it automatically passes a saving throw, so there’s no need for it to reroll, as that would also be a success. The reason Legendary Resistances exist is to stop boss monsters from instantly losing to a powerful D&D spell, like Polymorph, so the creators of D&D aren’t going to let one spell override such an important function.

The fact that Silvery Barbs cannot force a reroll when Legendary Resistance is used is helpful, but the spell is still extremely powerful for its level. It’s the kind of spell that DMs might want to consider banning, as it has a lot of utility for a first-level spell, and is the kind of thing that players will keep throwing out in every battle. The fact that the Silverquill Student background in Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos adds Silvery Barbs to a character’s spell list, regardless of their class, is another reason to restrict its presence in the game.
