Blizzard has announced that Winter Wonderland is coming back to Overwatch with new skins and returning challenges. This isn’t the first time that the online multiplayer title has celebrated the holidays, either. Since 2016, there has been a Winter Wonderland event every December with special game modes and rewards. Now, Blizzard is continuing the tradition this year, as well.

At last year’s BlizzCon, the sequel to Overwatch was announced, although there’s still relatively little known about the game. Back in January, however, a deleted tweet from the official PlayStation Brazil account may have leaked that Overwatch 2 was slated for release this year. That could have changed because of COVID-19, though.

Blizzard has added new skins and a new game mode to this year’s Winter Wonderland event. Returning game modes include Mei’s Snowball Offensive, Yeti Hunt, and Snowball Deathmatch. Players will also be able to experience a new mode in the form of 4v4 Freezethaw Elimination. In this mode, players must work together to completely freeze, rather than kill, the opposing team. Teammates can also thaw frozen players to get them back in the action.

Several weekly challenges are returning to the game, and each week will introduce a unique reward with an Epic skin for a different character. Week one has Elf Junkrat, week two has Gingerbread Ana, and week three has Frosty Roadhog. Aside from these, there will be five other Legendary skins available, such as Conductor Reinhardt, Penguin Mei, Ice Empress Moira, Toybot Zenyatta, and Lumberjack Torbjorn. This year’s Winter Wonderland is set to take place from December 15 to January 5.

This is all rather exciting news for fans of Overwatch. Not only are old game modes returning such as Mei’s Snowball Offensive, but a brand-new game mode is making its debut this year. As seen in the footage from the YouTube video, players will need to collaborate and strategize to ensure victory in Freezethaw Elimination. This is different from standard elimination, as freezing and thawing add entirely new strategic components to gameplay.

What’s also interesting are the abundance of rare skins making their way into the game over the next few weeks. Overwatch fans will want to complete this event’s challenges, as it could earn them three charming Epic skins. The five Legendary skins look exciting, as well, and they have plenty of variety to them. Ranging from a cute penguin to a powerful ice empress, Blizzard has seemingly covered the full spectrum of winter-themed costumes. Watching Elf Junkrat open an explosive present in the video is particularly enjoyable, too.
