Overwatch Removes Hero Pools For Lower Ranked Players

Developer Blizzard has removed Hero Pools from Competitive Play games in Overwatch for players below Master rank. The Hero Pool system was first implemented back in January as a way to prevent players from sticking to the same characters or meta too long.

The change is part of a bigger update that will modify where Hero Pools takes its data for its weekly ban choices. Rather than collect data from high-level Competitive Play matches, Hero Pools will now depend on hero usage rates from the Overwatch League. The developer is also working to refine the algorithm to prevent heroes from regularly being banned, among other things. As the updates are rather significant and will require a client patch, they won’t be implemented for some time so the decision to temporarily switch off Hero Pools for all Competitive Play matches was made.

In a post on the official Blizzard forums, Overwatch Developer Scott Mercer explained that they’re making Hero Pools only cover matches with an average player rank of Master or Grandmaster, the game’s two highest ranks, as the lower ranks were already showing a larger variety of heroes being used:

“Competitive Play at lower skill tiers already sees a tremendous amount of hero composition diversity in their matches, and we don’t think they need a system like Hero Pools to encourage even more.”

Mercer added in a later update that when Hero Pools returns, matches with an average skill rating (SR) of greater or equal to 3500 SR will have Hero Pools activated. This means those who have an SR that’s close to the cap may or may not have Hero Pools active in their match depending on how the other players affect the match’s average SR. He also added that players may still end up in Master or Grandmaster games even during their placement matches.

Ever since it was launched, Hero Pools has always been a controversial and polarizing mechanic. Only time will tell if these and future updates will positively or negatively affect Overwatch as a whole for both casual and competitive players alike but it’s good that Blizzard is actually taking steps to address the issues people have with the system and improve player experiences across the board rather than focusing on just competitive play or releasing new heroes.
