Pacific Rim 2 Scott Eastwood in Talks for Key Role

Things are going pretty good for Scott Eastwood this year. In addition to being the son of legendary actor and filmmaker Clint Eastwood (which probably makes every year pretty cool), the actor has lined up a slew of roles in high-profile films hitting theaters soon. In September, Eastwood will appear alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Oliver Stone’s Snowden and before that, the up-and-comer will join the “Worst. Heroes. Ever.” with a still-undisclosed role in Warner Bros.’ late-summer superhero action film Suicide Squad. As if that wasn’t enough excitement, Eastwood will appear in the next Fast and Furious film, Fast 8, for director F. Gary Gray, as well as Ben Affleck’s next directorial effort, Live by Night in 2017.

It’s a packed schedule to be sure, one that could become even more crowded if his role in Suicide Squad is being kept secret for the reason many suspect it is, and he winds up stealing the show (and maybe getting a solo film out of it). But in Hollywood, you have to strike while the iron is hot, and Eastwood isn’t letting his recent good fortunes in the casting department come to an end anytime soon. In fact, the actor is reportedly in talks to join John Boyega by taking a “key role” in the upcoming Pacific Rim: Maelstrom.

According to Deadline, Legendary – the film company behind the Guillermo del Toro-created Kaiju vs. Giant Fighting Robots franchise – has its eye on Eastwood to take a starring role in the Steven DeKnight-directed sequel. There’s no word on what his role would be at the moment, but given Eastwood’s rising status, it’s safe to assume it would be significant.

News of the actor’s possible involvement comes the same day as Universal announced Pacific Rim 2 has been locked into an early 2018 release date, which, of course, comes just a few weeks after the news that Boyega was cast in the film’s central role – which will see him play the son of Idris Elba’s Jaeger pilot/marshal in the Pan Pacific Defense Corps, Stacker Pentecost. Given Eastwood’s roles as of late, it’s not too far of a stretch to think he would make a good fit as a Jaeger pilot (or co-pilot, as it were), but it’s too soon to say. With any luck, should talks with Eastwood prove fruitful, details on his character and the film’s plot will be made available at the same time.

Eastwood has been acting since 2006, often appearing in his father’s films, like Flags of Our Fathers and Gran Torino. Lately, though, his star has been on the rise and supporting roles, like the one he had in David Ayer’s Fury have given way to starring roles in last year’s Diablo and The Longest Ride. Considering his current trajectory, Legendary and Universal are smart to lock him down for Pacific Rim: Maelstrom now, before his roles in Suicide Squad and Fast 8 lead to Eastwood’s dance card being even fuller than it already is.

Pacific Rim: Maelstrom is expected to hit theaters on February 23, 2018.
