Paper Mario How to Unlock The Secret Gold Heart Banner

Fans of Paper Mario: The Origami King may be surprised to find out there are several different endings to the game based on a player’s choices and the things they did and did not complete during the game. There is also a secret ending to unlock that will play following the game’s end credits. To do this, the player must complete the game 100%, which includes earning all the available Trophies. Another endgame Easter egg can sometimes be spotted in the ending picture in the game’s credits, but players will have to achieve it first.

With so many bosses, enemies, and mini-games, Paper Mario: The Origami King can take a while and a few tries to beat. Sometimes, at the end of the game, players might notice a banner in the ending picture with a gold heart on it. This signifies that the game has recorded a player achievement, though it will never be noted and does not count toward beating the game 100%. Here is how to unlock the secret Gold Heart Banner and its achievement in Paper Mario: The Origami King.

Unlock the Secret Gold Heart Banner in Paper Mario: The Origami King

The key to unlocking the secret Gold Heart Banner in Paper Mario: The Origami King is to accomplish a small feat. The player needs to beat the game without ever getting a Game Over. Players will see a Game Over screen if their HP reaches zero or, sometimes, if they lose a mini-game like incorrectly guessing the Snifit’s mood in Shroom City or losing Sudden Death in Shy Guys Finish Last.

Upon losing a game and getting Game Over, the player can always revive to the last save point, which is why they are encouraged to save often. The game will also typically autosave near the start of a cutscene or mini-game.

To avoid losing HP and reaching Game Over, players can have a 1-Up Mushroom in their inventory. These will automatically revive Mario when his HP reaches 0 in battle to avoid the Game Over screen. Mario will get his first 1-Up Mushroom from the Battle Lab. Others will then appear for purchase at the Toad Town Item shop. Mario can only have one in inventory at a time.

If players avoid the Game Over screen for the whole game, at the end of the credits, the image will include a banner with a gold heart, signifying this accomplishment. While it does not count toward unlocking the secret ending, it is an accomplishment for players to be proud of. For an added element of challenge, players can also try not to use any Battle Accessories, which would allow them to also earn the Secret Gold Fist Banner.

If players do manage to complete the game without seeing a Game Over screen, in addition to the banner, they will also have a Gold Heart badge on their save file following completion of the game.
