Parasite Eve Deserves A Netflix Anime Remake

A Parasite Eve anime remake on Netflix would be a great way to revive the dormant franchise. Parasite Eve has an interesting history as a series, and it actually began as a novel by Hideaki Sena. This 1995 book was more of a David Cronenberg-style tale of body horror than the blockbuster approach taken by its later video game adaptation, which arrived in 1998. The game follows on from the events of the novel but relocates the action to New York. It was a unique mix of survival horror and RPG and follows cop Aya Brea as she tries to stop a creature called Eve.

The original Parasite Eve is now something of a classic game from the PS1 era, thanks to a surprisingly involving story and mashing of gameplay genres. Madonna also reportedly acquired the rights to produce a film from the game, which didn’t come to pass. Parasite Eve 2 arrived a couple of years later, which became more of a traditional survival horror title with some RPG elements thrown in. The sequel received a more mixed response from fans, though it’s now considered a solid title in its own right.

It took a full decade for the series to return one last time, for the action-focused spinoff The 3rd Birthday. While retaining Aya – voiced by Yvonne Strahovski – and other characters, this title had little in common with previous games in terms of plot or gameplay. While there are occasionally rumors a new game being developed, the series has been dormant since The 3rd Birthday, which unlike its predecessors wasn’t a title for the PS1 but was developed for the PSP. The franchise is brimming with potential and deserves to make a comeback, and a Parasite Eve remake for Netflix could be the key.

One reason a live-action movie probably didn’t happen is that the scale of Parasite Eve’s story is quite big. It takes place in an evacuated New York over the course of nearly a week and features multiple creatures and setpieces. There’s also the infamous opening, where the titular Eve causes the audience of an opera performance to spontaneously combust. It’s hard to squeeze all that into a movie, but a TV series could be the right format. Each episode could cover one of the six days of the game, though it might be better suited to anime than live-action.

Netflix’s Castlevania did a superb job translating the games to TV series, and the upcoming Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness shows the platform sees the value in these adaptations. While Parasite Eve would be a more obscure title to modern audiences, its juggling of genres – action, horror, detective story, etc – and great protagonist in Aya would make it a popular choice on the platform. A vivid realization of the opera scene alone would hook horror fans into a Parasite Eve series, and if it’s a success, not only are there existing sequels future seasons could adapt, but it could also help spur a new game in the franchise too.
