Parks And Rec’s Entertainment 720 Explained (And How It Could Have Succeeded)

Entertainment 720, Tom Haverford (Aziz Ansari) and Jean-Ralphio Saperstein’s (Ben Schwartz) multimedia production conglomerate in Parks and Recreation, failed, but here’s how it could have succeeded. Entertainment 720 makes its first appearance in Parks and Recreation season 3, episode 16, “Li’l Sebastian.” Jean-Ralphio shares how he made his money, saying, “I made my money the old-fashioned way: I got run over by a Lexus.” He and Tom Haverford brainstorm business ideas on Parks & Rec; eventually, the duo settle on creating Entertainment 720.

Tom has always had an entrepreneurial spirit. He and Jean-Ralphio can often be seen riffing off of each other’s business ideas. Their brainstorming is not lacking in buzzwords that appeal to an audience that enjoys the finer things in life. Whether Tom is trying to sell Snake Juice, a 140-proof alcoholic beverage in an eye-catching vessel, or pitching his own signature cologne, “Tommy Fresh,” to local fragrance maker, Dennis Feinstein, there is no doubt that Tom has a knack for marketing.

Tom and Jean-Ralphio share a love for all things high-end. Entertainment 720 appears to mostly be about appearances as evidenced by their headquarters and the swag that they produce. The business certainly doesn’t seem to bring in any revenue. In fact, when Parks and Rec’s Ben Wyatt (Adam Scott) does their finances, he notes that Entertainment 720 isn’t going to last with their current business model (or their complete lack of a business model, to be precise). However, their “end of the world” party, into which they poured every last dime they had, was hugely successful, and was a blueprint for how the business might have been sustainable. Had they spent more time on creating high-end experiences for well-paying customers, their company may have actually survived.

Unfortunately, the choices Jean-Ralphio and Tom make in Parks and Recreation are more in favor of style over function. Entertainment 720’s headquarters was originally an airport hangar. The majority of the space doesn’t appear to be used for much, but rather is speckled with luxurious items, from a complicated couch to a see-through toilet filled with money. NBA players Detlef Schrempf and Roy Hibbert were even hired to shoot hoops on their indoor basketball court. Instead of recognizing that the success of their party might have been turned into a great business model, they squandered their money on shallow presentation.

Naturally, as was predicted by Ben (and the five other accountants they hired), the dynamic duo runs out of money, goes bankrupt, and Entertainment 720 ultimately fails. In Parks and Recreation season 4, episode 6, “End of the World,” Tom and Jean-Ralphio decide to take their remaining $10,000 to throw the best party possible at the same time as The Reasonabilist’s (Pawnee’s local cult) ceremony for the end of the world. Oddly enough, the party was a huge success. They didn’t appear to charge for anything provided at the party, but had they, it would have brought in a lot of revenue. Judging by the number of people that came out to attend the party, Pawnee seems to have the right clientele for this type of experience.

Entertainment 720 could have been Tom’s most successful venture during Parks and Recreation. Had he and Jean-Ralphio taken all their grand ideas and actually charged clients for what they provided, they may have actually been able to sustain the company. Perhaps there is more to Entertainment 720 than meets the eye. After all, as Tom says about what his company does: “It’s too hard to explain.”
