Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous Preview A Strong Update

With Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, Owlcat Games is following up on the success of the Pathfinder: Kingmaker RPG with a new story, classes, and plenty of other exciting features. Based on the tabletop RPG of the same name, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous translates traditional tabletop gaming into a video game with a slick interface, multiple character paths, and a choice of real-time or turn-based combat. The story is taken from the Pathfinder adventure path and tasks players to face off with a demon invasion that threatens the world.

Owlcat is clearly listening to players of Kingmaker by implementing many features requested by fans into Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. The camera is no longer stuck in a fixed position, allowing players to rotate around the isometric 3D environment. Companions are now set to auto-level alongside the player, which creates less time spent in menus, and animal companions can be mounted for a quicker traversal of the world. Combat has also been revamped with the option to switch between real-time or turn-based at any moment, an addition that the definitive edition of Kingmaker added.

When Kingmaker originally came out it was met with some criticism over the game’s difficulty and ease of access – many players found it too difficult to navigate the game’s systems and combat. Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous aims to fix these issues by offering a much more intuitive and extensive tutorial that runs alongside the player as they play through the game, explaining each mechanic as it pertains to the player experience. This is a welcome addition to the series and should help non-tabletop gamers ease into Wrath of the Righteous.

Alongside all the updated bells and whistles of Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous are the new Mythic Paths. Players can now push their characters to new heights with incredibly powerful paths that synergize with their chosen classes. Each of the nine Mythic Paths will improve their character development in unique ways. Players can become an all-powerful Angel or Demon, rule the undead as a Lich, or tip the scales of evil as the all-devouring monstrosity that is Swarm That Walks. Whatever path is chosen adds to the pool of options for each character and any character can choose any path they desire, although some will work better with certain classes than others.

Another new addition to Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is the Crusade mode that turns the game into an overhead tactics-type battle where players will command troops throughout a grid-based battle system. This will take place during specific battles in the story and allow players to use military leaders that can bolster troops and apply unique abilities to the battlefields. These leaders will also level up after battles adding even more choices for the future.

With the four-chapter limited preview, it’s clear that Owlcat is passionate about making the Pathfinder series better with each new adventure. The integrated tutorial will allow newcomers of the series to ease into the game and the updated features are a welcome addition to anyone who played Kingmaker. Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is still a challenging game to get into with players having to keep track of the many aspects that can come with its tabletop systems, but ultimately looks to be a great experience with an incredible story and lore to make it all worth the effort.
