Over the course of Saturday Night Live’s 46-year history, many actors, singers, and other celebrities have returned to host multiple times. But only an illustrious few have made it to the elite Five-Timers Club, which, as the name implies, denotes them having hosted at least five times.

The trend began way back in 1990 when Tom Hanks mentioned it was his fifth time hosting the show. The first inductee (before the club was even a “thing”) was Buck Henry, who hosted for his fifth time in 1977. Steve Martin followed shortly after in 1978. Now, there are 22 members in SNL’s Five-Timers Club. Actor Paul Rudd became the newest FIve-Timer in 2021, the 10th new member since 2007.

Drew Barrymore (2007)

Drew Barrymore has been in the acting business since she was a child, so it’s no surprise she has hosted SNL more times than most, with a total of six. Most interestingly, she first hosted in 1982 when she was just 7 years old, hot off her role in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. This made her the youngest SNL ever. However, she hasn’t hosted again since 2009.

Even if she hasn’t hosted for more than a decade, Barrymore has a presence on the show via cast member’s Chloe Fineman, one of the best SNL celebrity impersonators. Barrymore has also made the odd cameo appearance. Back in the day when she was host, Barrymore did impressions of everyone from Abigail Breslin to Charlize Theron to Victoria Beckham.

Justin Timberlake (2013)

There was big hoopla surrounding Justin Timberlake’s induction into the Five-Timers Club when he hosted in March 2013, which was also his third time doing double duty as both host and musical guest. His first was way back in 2003 when his then girlfriend Britney Spears made a cameo as well. Timberlake is considered one of the best guest hosts, often with skits opposite real-life friend and former cast member Jimmy Fallon, like “Wrappinville” and “The Barry Gibb Show” along with digital shorts with Andy Samberg, like “D— in a Box.”

Ben Affleck (2013)

Fans might be surprised to know that Ben Affleck is in the Five-Timers Club since he hasn’t hosted since 2013. But he first hosted in 2000, the same year he appeared in Reindeer Games and Boiler Room. That was three years after his breakout movie Good Will Hunting, which earned him and co-creator Matt Damon their first Oscar.

Having hosted a total of five times, Affleck did impressions of Alec Baldwin, James Carville, and Keith Olbermann. He was also once impersonated by Chris Kattan back in 1998.

Tina Fey (2015)

A former head writer, cast member, and “Weekend Update” co-anchor from the show, Tina Fey is one of the most successful SNL alumni and one of the best hosts in the Saturday Night Live Five-Timer’s Club. She worked on the show from 1997 to 2006 and returned many times to do her spot-on impersonation of Sarah Palin.

Fey has gone on to achieve massive success with shows like 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and movies like Baby Mama, Date Night, and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. She returned to host for the first time in 2008 and was last on the show for her sixth hosting gig in 2015.

Scarlett Johansson (2017)

One of few to host more than five times, Scarlett Johansson has racked up an impressive six hosting gigs from 2006 through to 2017. While she has gone on to become a huge movie star, Johansson had only a dozen or so credits to her name the first time she hosted. One of the most notable was Lost in Translation opposite SNL alum Bill Murray, another Five-Timers Club member.

Now known to the world as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and for performances in iconic movies like Chef and Marriage Story, Johansson met her husband, “Weekend Update” co-anchor Colin Jost, on the show. Her most memorable sketches include Lexi from Mike’s Fountainry, a Christmas elf, and her impersonations of Ivanka Trump and Rosario Dawson.

Melissa McCarthy (2017)

McCarthy impressed viewers in her most recent SNL appearances by doing a hilariously exaggerated impersonation of then White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer. Interestingly, McCarthy has been nominated for Emmys for every time she has hosted the show, winning in 2017.

She first appeared in 2011, and her most recent appearance, which inducted her into the Five-Timers Club, was in 2017. Some of her other notable characters include abusive women’s basketball coach Sheila Kelly and old Hollywood actor Gaye Fontaine.

Dwayne Johnson (2017)

Memorable for his role in the “The Rock Obama” sketch, which saw President Barack Obama turn into the Rock when he got angry, Johnson has put his comedic talents on full display each time hosting SNL. He first appeared way back in 2000, prior to his acting career really taking off. Today, some of Dwayne Johnson’s best movie roles include Moana, Furious 7, and The Other Guys. His most recent SNL appearance was in 2017.

In addition to the Rock Obama, Johnson’s appearances are also memorable for his impressions of people like Dennis Rodman. Some of his funniest sketches include “Dinner Date,” in which he arrives with his girlfriend (played by Cecily Strong) to take over a couples’ dinner, and “New Disney Movie” which had him playing a rough-around-the-edges, live-action version of Bambi.

Jonah Hill (2018)

After first hosting way back in 2008, the year after he appeared in the hilarious comedy Superbad and the same year as the movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Jonah Hill marked his fifth time hosting in 2018.

The character of Adam Grossman eating dinner at Benihana is one of his most memorable recurring sketches. Hill was also hilariously impersonated by Bobby Moynihan in a 2011 opening monologue. Like many Five Timers, Hill has also made a cameo appearance in another episode of the show that he wasn’t hosting.

Will Ferrell (2019)

Will Ferrell was one of the funniest cast members on SNL during his time there from 1995 to 2002, and he’s also one of the best cast members turned hosts of Saturday Night Live. He, of course, went on to achieve tremendous success in movies like Elf, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, and Anchorman. He produces as well and founded the comedy website Funny or Die.

Some of his best moments on the show include his impersonations of everyone from President George W. Bush to Alex Trebek in the iconic recurring Celebrity Jeopardy skit, as well as James Lipton, host of Inside the Actors Studio. Ferrell first returned to host in 2005 and has come back a total of five times, the last being in 2019.

Paul Rudd (2021)

Paul Rudd’s December 2021 hosting gig marks his fifth hosting appearance, with his first being back in 2008. Rudd, known for movies like Ant-Man and, most recently, Apple TV+ original series The Shrink Next Door, has a reputation for never breaking character and always playing the straight man to cast members’ antics, letting them shine. Some of his notable characters include Austin Vogelcheck from the kissing family and the awkward single dad.
