Peacemaker writer/director James Gunn doesn’t want to hear any more “you can’t see me” jokes in relation to series star John Cena, who portrays Christopher Smith/Peacemaker in the HBO Max original series.
“If I never hear another John Cena invisible joke I’ll be happy,” Gunn said in response to a now-deleted tweet, referencing Cena’s “You can’t see me” catchphrase from his time as a WWE wrestler.
Cena’s “you can’t see me” catchphrase has spawned countless memes over the years, with the joke even returning to haunt him in a recent video where he, dressed as Peacemaker, read mean tweets from fans. “I have the feeling that this joke will someday go away,” he said in the video.
Peacemaker’s season finale, Episode 8, “It’s Cow or Never,” is set to premiere on HBO Max on Feb. 17, with the first three episodes first airing on Jan. 13. While the show’s first season will consist of eight episodes overall, only seven were shown to critics before the series premiere. According to Gunn, this was to avoid any potential spoilers.
“I wouldn’t let them put out eight,” Gunn said in a previous interview. “They wanted to put out all eight. I said, ‘No way. No chance in hell are we putting out all eight.’ There’s just too many things [that] happen in episode eight that I just could not let it get out there. It would absolutely be spoiled. You know, I wouldn’t even let them give it to one place or anything like that because it just wasn’t… I didn’t want it to be out there.”
In 2021, Gunn spoke about the possibility of multiple seasons months before Peacemaker premiered. However, with the season finale drawing closer, he recently stated that “there’s a really good chance” of the DC Extended Universe series being renewed for a second season, though this has not been officially confirmed by HBO Max.
Peacemaker picks up directly after the events of The Suicide Squad and sees Christopher Smith/Peacemaker drafted into an off-the-books mission known as Project Butterfly. He is joined by ARGUS agents Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), John Economos (Steve Agee), Clemson Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji) and Leota Abedayo (Danielle Brooks), as well as Adrian Chase/Vigilante (Freddie Stroma).
“This guy is a loud, obnoxious, bro-ey douchebag,” Cena previously said about his character. “That sucks. But why? At what point did he become such a douchebag and what does that mean? There’s a lot to dive into there.”
New episodes of Peacemaker drop every Thursday on HBO Max.
