Penn Badgley Teases YOU Season 3 Episode 1 Will End Unexpectedly

YOU star Penn Badgley teases that season 3, episode 1 will end unexpectedly. Based on Caroline Kepnes’ novel of the same name, YOU went relatively unnoticed when it debuted on Lifetime in 2018. The romantic thriller, which initially delved into the deeply troubled mind of the twisted Joe Goldberg (Badgley) as he searches for a lasting relationship, experienced a surge in popularity when it was acquired by Netflix. In season 2, the series introduced Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti) as a character who seems like the perfect romantic partner at first, but gradually reveals herself to be even more unhinged than Joe.

After a long delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, YOU season 3 will premiere on October 15. The thriller picks up as Joe and Love move to Madre Linda in Northern California. Now married and raising their son Henry, the couple is surrounded by tech entrepreneurs, judgmental bloggers, and biohackers. However, although Joe is committed to being a husband and father, he’s afraid of Love’s deadly recklessness. He also takes a liking to his neighbor, Natalie (Michaela McManus). The new cast additions also include Tati Gabrielle, Dylan Arnold, Shalita Grant, Travis Van Winkle, and Scott Speedman.

During an interview with Access, Badgley offered viewers a preview of what to expect when YOU season 3 arrives on Netflix. The actor revealed that, although episode 1 won’t stray too far away from the expectations of fans, the pacing might be surprising. In particular, he noted that something “quite unexpected” happens in episode 1, which audiences may usually expect to happen in a season finale. Read Badgley’s full quote below:

“Yeah, I mean we’re definitely upping the ante. I think by the end of the first episode, something quite unexpected happens. It’s not outside of the wheelhouse of what would happen, but you might think that would happen at the very end of the season. So, it’s like, we sort of hurdle along very quickly. So…I think by the end of the season, you’re in this totally different place that you didn’t think you’d be.”

Badgley’s remarks speaks to how YOU shifted since it began on Lifetime. Fans now come to the show with the expectation that certain tropes will be fulfilled, and that Joe and Love will behave in recognizable ways. Part of that expectation relates to the pacing of the series, which burns through storylines at a fast pace and kills off supporting characters at a reliable clip. Based on what Badgley is teasing, in addition to the way YOU has unfolded in the past, one possibility is that Natalie or another major new addition to the show will face a surprisingly swift demise.

As has been the case with other dramas like The Vampire Diaries or even Badgley’s previous show, Gossip Girl, it can be difficult to maintain a fast-paced series beyond the initial few years. Early reviews of YOU season 3 indicate that, although the Netflix hit doesn’t break from its established formula, it’s still a lot of fun to watch. With the show’s return just days away, fans will soon be able to make assessments of their own.
