Pokemon has created some of the most iconic and beloved creatures of all time. Look no further than Pikachu, a mascot so recognizable that they have a prominent balloon in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
For nearly two decades the Pokemon series has put out wonderfully imaginative creatures, but time has shown that there’s also a dark side to Pokemon. The world of Pokemon is a strange one with humans living side-by-side with the creatures. However, it raises the question, what exactly do they eat?
Whether it’s in the Pokemon anime or the games, it’s easy to spot meat dishes whenever there’s food, but the series has never shown any other animals outside of Pokemon themselves. The only assumption that can be made is that people eat Pokemon.
There’s Tons of Proof People Eat Pokemon
The most obvious assumption to make about people eating Pokemon comes from the designs that are straight-up based on food items. Vanillite and Vanillish are the most obvious, as they’re based on ice cream cones. The Pokedex entry from Pokemon Ultra Moon even sounds just like how people treat ice cream, “This hearty Pokémon survived the Ice Age. It’s incredibly popular in very hot regions.” Of course, there’s much more solid evidence to reference.
The Pokemon anime regularly suggests people eat Pokemon, with the string of episodes aboard the St. Ann providing the most evidence. When they board the ship Ash and Misty go straight for a buffet filled with meat, lobster, and all kinds of other delicacies. Again, there’s been very little evidence that anything other than Pokemon lives in this world. At the same time, in episode 26 “Hypno’s Naptime,” Ash and crew are presented with a sick Magikarp and Ash describes it by saying “Looks like it’s ready for the deli counter.” After the battle aboard the St. Ann, when Ash is stranded with Team Rocket, everyone imagines all the different ways they could cook up poor Magikarp, including Magikarp Sashimi. Episode 49 “So Near, Yet So Farfetch’d,” also has a Pokedex description saying Farfetch’d is nearly extinct because it makes a delicious meal.
There are plenty of other instances in the Pokemon anime, but the games also show evidence that people eat Pokemon. Prime evidence of this is Slowpoke, who’s tail is regarded as a delicacy. The Pokedex in Pokemon Moon reads “Alolan home cooking involves drying Slowpoke tails and then simmering them into a salty stew.” Past that Pokemon Shield’s Pokedex reads “Because Galarian Slowpoke eat the seeds of a plant that grows only in Galar, their tails have developed a spicy flavor.”
There’s tons of proof that people east Pokemon in that universe, and it sure makes everything feel a bit darker than the bright cheery aesthetic the series is known for.
