With Disney+ working on plans for a live-action Percy Jackson series to become a part of their original lineup, fans are getting excited about seeing some of the favorite characters on screen for the second time. The initial films left a lot to be desired in terms of their adaptation of the source material.
With this family-friendly franchise getting a second start though, there’s an opportunity to put forward the right version of these mythological characters. The Greek gods of course play a huge part in the Percy Jackson books, so there’s a lot of great deities that would make for great additions to the TV show.
10 Zeus
The god of gods and king of Olympus, Zeus, is perhaps the god that has been adapted most from Greek mythology. He is one of the most famous deities of Olympus and serves an important role in the books.
He is the reason why the demi-gods get separated from their parents, creating the rules that must be followed. He was originally portrayed by Sean Bean, but perhaps someone less charming and more stern needs to take on the role.
9 Poseidon
Poseidon is such an important role to cast as he is Percy’s father. The two share an indisputable bond, but have a complex relationship due to the rules that keep them apart.
The character is both caring, but also a little aloof, unable to meddle in the events of Earth. This is such an important part in the books and it’ll be great to see it fully realised in an ongoing show.
8 Hades
Unlike some of Disney’s other adaptations of Greek mythology, Hades isn’t an outright villain in the novels. He’s a far more complex character who is jealous of those living in Olympus.
The king of the underworld was initially portrayed fantastically by Steve Coogan, but the writing meant that the character wouldn’t work long term; especially not as a father to Nico. The direction Disney takes the casting of this character will really define the tone of the series.
7 Athena
Athena is one of the most intelligent and powerful women in all of mythology, which is why fans are excited to see her on the small screen. She was barely covered in the original Percy Jackson films.
However, much like the other demi-gods, her relationship with Annabeth is especially complex, which should lead for some tense drama. When she gets involved in situations though she is both fearless and incredible at war tactics.
6 Iris
Iris may seem like an odd goddess to be excited about from these young adult novels, but she’s actually a character that plays into the hero’s day to day lives.
As the goddess of rainbows, she is in charge of helping the demi-gods communicate with one another. An Iris message is the preferred method to send a message in Camp Half-Blood. Adding Iris deepens the universe and shows off some minor deities.
5 Hephaestus
Hephaestus is simply one of the cooler characters in the series. The god of blacksmiths is able to create some truly remarkable magical objects and weaponry.
Every fantasy land needs some kind of mystical artifact and Hephaestus never fails to deliver for both mortals and gods alike. His arrival would also mark the creation of some of the mechanical creatures the heroes come across.
4 Ares
The god of war Ares has been both an ally and an enemy to Percy and his friends. He’s an incredibly entertaining figure though with a penchant for unleashing violence.
Asides from his weapons based powers, Ares can actually be quite funny. A little dim and very headstrong, Ares can look pretty stupid at times but sometimes has his heart in the right place.
3 Artemis
Artemis is actually one of the more well-rounded characters from the series. Leading her own group of hunters, they are a band of fierce warriors that swear upon maidenhood and violence.
They become a really great addition to the novels, helping to protect the innocent and contributing to the ongoing narrative. Artemis is also defined by the complicated relationship she has with her twin brother Apollo.
2 Hecate
Hecate is one of the few villainous gods on this list, joining the forces of Kronos to try and bring down the Olympians. She is the goddess of magic, which makes her powers one of the most visually stunning.
She puts a sleeping spell over the whole of New York during the final battle and is also responsible for her daughter Circe, who plays into the plot largely. She’s one of the more unique gods that sides with the villains.
1 Dionysus
Dionysus was banished to Earth and forced to serve at Camp Half-Blood, without even the alcohol that he loves so much. Although playing on a few fantasy tropes he becomes quite a good mentor.
Stanley Tucci played the character originally, but the Disney+ iteration of Dionysus has to be a lot rougher around the edges as that’s really part of his charm!
